- Let me assure you that networks, individual stations. and newspapers "will respond to the dollar." You may hear the individual reponer or writer say that he "will not compromise my position for sponsors" but in fact, large and small advenisers and sponsors "pay the way" and if the bucks are cut off the positions will change. The heads of these companies will respond to economic pressure. If you are going to "raise hell" then let's do it correctly and stop telling each other how bad a cenain program or editorial was, let's tell the man who pays the way. Even politicians respond to their large contributors. and there's no reason that you can't cut out newspaper lists of contributors of certain politicians and notify them that you do not agree with their candidate's positions. Letters speak louder and longer than phone calls. Try it. Your efforts will be rewarded and we will survive. OG (j) WIST America's weekly motorcycle newsp'8per Sharon Clayton. I refer to your Honda ad appearing on pap 60·61 of your july lit illue: "Baja 1000, Parker 400, Mexicali 250, Baja 500... if anyone e1le ever finished these races on three wheela it's because they 10lt one." Wrong! Wrong! My husband, Franlt M. Danielsm fmished the November 1970 Baja 1000 on three wheela.:.a side1a4cJd Then he went on to ftnish the 500 in the following june and in November of 1971 he again finished the Baja 1000 and bettered his original time by about 5 hours. And he (and his monlteys) did it on a used 650 Triumph previously owned and ridden by Steve McQueen and Bud Ekins in the International Six Days Trial. That was over 10 years ago when the races were conducted by NORRA not SCORE. So, folks, don't believe everything you read in the newspapers, especially if it's an advenisement. MRS. FRANK M. Raisin' heck Every week I see numerous letters where the writer is calling to the attention of the readers some wrong that is being done to the motorcyclist. These letters are a step in the right direction but it is time we hit the conservationalist, bleeding heans, and anti·motorcycling crowd where it hurts, "the pocket book." Here are some guidelines to help you make your voice loud and clear. (I)Wheri you see an anti·motorcycle program on TV or hear it on the radio, take notes: program names, network, date, objectionablecontmt, andmost imponantly, the names of the sponsors. If it is in a newspaper or a magazine, make notes: name of publication, writer, date, objectional content, and names of major advenisen mOlt notably motorcycle manufacturers, dealers, suppliers, etc. (2) Now relax and let your temper cool down. Emotional letters, name calling, insults, threats, etc, are only counter productive. Be couneous, factual, and to the point. (3) Always edit your letters prior to submission. If you are not sure of your facts, take the time to confmn your suspicions. Do not ramble or change your point of attack. (4) Write to every sponsor or advertiser possible.. Let each know that if they are truly interested in motorcycling and its recreational imponance, that they should only suppon actua1 programming that truly gives the true picture. Make your voice heard in as many areas as possible. Copies should be forwarded to your club. to the station, newspaper, and to the motorcycle news media. (Cycle News, Dirt Bile, etc.) Let these persons know you intend to voice your concern everytime you see or hear adverse or objectionable . material. (5) Address your concerns to the top. Send your letters to the Chairman of the 'Board, Chief Executive Officer, and President of the business or the company. Mark your envelope and letters "PersonaL" You can reference major companies at your public library in the Dunn and Bradstreet Directories and other such publicationa. Local firms can be contacted by phone to secure the names of the top people. OK, AA, but don't forget th4t letters to the networks, papers, advertisers, etc., should alsQ be wed CIS positive reinforcement to positive motorcycle· on'ented programming or writing... Editor.
