On the second lap Miller had a hu~ lead by heading strai"ht to the pits. On the second lap Miller had a h~ lead as Ogilvie dropped out, leaving Smith a distant second. Miller's lead was 10 big that he st~ped for a cool drink and still had room to spare. Smith didn't ha~ any time to spare though as Clark was ~ttin~ closer. As ~ne waited at the fimsh to see who would take second, Smith came in with Clark nowhere in sight until one of the top Intermediate riders, Murray Kapko, 'was spotted coming down the last stretch with a helmet bobbing right behind him. It looked like an incredible dice until everyone realized it was Clark riding buddy-up with Kapko after leaving his broken Husky a few miles back and hitching a ride in. To paraphrase Casey Stengel, "a race ain't over 'til it'. over. Over on the west side the Novices and Beginners were having their own fun on the longer coune. C bikes and Trails were up flJ'St with Rich Tiben of Whiteknuckle M.C. leading both lape over Invader Tony RCIlIetti who finiShed a bit scraped up. Beginner winner was David Brown of the Desert Raider! and young Charlie Morris of SoCal M.C. taking flJ'St Trailbike on hi! It RIDE AWARE Y~80. EuroScrams By DeVore Fortney F1U:MONT VALLEY, CA, JUNE Z7-Z8 Consistency was a goal atttai~ed by only a few riden this weekend as the desert sun made "riders" out of a lot of racers. Cliff Thomas and Kevin Hopkins were two Experts who had no problems though, with each winning both Saturday and Sunday. Kevin rules the "c" bikes with his Mickey Mouse Racing Team Yamaha while Check,.,. CliIf "Diver" Thomas used his Yamaha to head up the ZSOS. Other racers with double wins were Z50cc Novice Dale Conner, top woman Lori Fanner, Super Vet Bill Saltzman and number one Senior Heavyweight Morris Norman. Saturday morning found the Experts and Intermediates over on the east side course which was the shorter of the two. First up for the coolest ride of the day were the C bikers and Trailbikes. Checker Pete Postel chased Hopkins off the start towards Government ,Peak but watched him pull away when they hit the foothills before heading back. Pete probably wished the race was later when his water-cooled UScc might have held the ~. Back a few seconds Intermediate Ray Waten was ho1ding off MasterIinJr. Mike Harris on , a new SuzuIri water-pumper that sounded real clean but couldn't clCllle onRay'sY~. The Semon lined up next as the dez began heating up and Norman jumped out fast, amxous to ~t it ~r with. In punuit were Ron Bebo and C bikers Gary Charters and Jim Harris. Charters and Harris hung in there up to a ditch at the fint road cnMBing, where Charters did !Us magic act and floated away out of Harris' sight. Next up wen: the Z50s and it was Chuck Stevns off the bomb but this wasn't Chuck's weekend as he was not only llushed baclt to third but was literally pushed into the ftnish when his bike developed heat stroke. Clifl Thomas and Kenny Upp finished I-Z both days. Intertnediate winners wen: thCllle impeccably dressed Buckaroo boys, Doug Behnke and Ray Coaway on Fullerton Yamaha. Ray took a second on Sunday too 10 both will probably be adding red plates to their wardrobe soon. The big boys lined up and got lucky before they ~ took off as a cool wind came in to blow the dust off the trail. It didn't help in the ~n-lilte canyons but any reprieve is nice. Chuck Miller (Hus) got the hot start with Bob Balentine ~~ a good shot from the far right of the bne. Bob was riding a Honda 450 Pro-Link, which is becoming more popular in the desen. At the end of the ftrst lap Chuck had a good lead on Bruce OJrilvie (Yam) with Dan Smith (Hus) ancfTerry Clark (Hus) farther back. Balentine came limping in with a rear tire ha~ a disagreement with the rim on' which direction to go. Bob settled it for them Women's racing was terrorized b, Buckeroo Lori Fanner (Yam) followed by Diane Holeman on ~turday and Jolene Payne (KTM) on SUDday. Other winners were Intermediate Debbie Hopkins, Novice Michele BUentiJH aud Beginner SaDdy Perkins. Dale Conner found both courses to his liking and won both days. This reporter can't tell you bow good his rides were because all I ever saw of Dale was his dust on the trail. Open Novices were led by Mark Molina and Ken Bunting on ~turday. Myapo1ogies to Beginnen and Sunday racers as results were unavailable at press time. Vet racing was dominated both days by Bill Saltzman in the Open cIaas and Jim Bringhurst in the Z50s. The afternoon supplied competition of a different kind with the battle to stay cool foremoet in ~ne's activities. The usual set-up was to strip down to shorts in the shade with a beer but some of the more ambitious types found expeditions into the alfalfa field sprinklers or water pistol fights more excit~. The ultimate was a MasterlinJr.s raid on the urwspecting Buckeroos with fire extinguishen. Pa Farmer didn't seem to mind the soaking at alll Later in the day a short coune was set up for the kids and Mini Invader Keith Loonfoot took such a lead he had to race an extra lap while the Four Aces searched for the cbeckered flag! Charlie Morris smoked the older kids. Sunday morning seemed a little cooler and with the racers switching courses a few raults were switched too. The best race was the~ Open Experts with BUenrlne and Ogiivie out to rnalte up for yesterday's breakdowns. Balentine kept his rear wheel straight this time and rode his Honda to a win. Bruce Ogt1vie kept Dan Smith behind him for 1IeCOnd. Murray Kapko decided not to ride with Terry CIaB today and won the Intertnediate cIaas easily. The Open bikes were the only ones able to mm three lape on the long coune within 45 minutes. ~ 500 riden went home satisfied leaving the Four Aces the unenviable job of pullinI[ down the counes in the beat at the afternoon. Only one rider didn't go home smiling and that was Shamrock Ted "It only hurts when I laugth" Hunnicut who reportedly suffered a fractured jaw. •
