CO en NMRA Springnationals to.Vance Photo by Greg Guarinello COLUMBUS, OH, JUNE 21 Terry Vance, for the fourth time this year in NMRA Pro Stock drag racing, topped Mike Keyte in the final round. This time the racing took place at the rain delayed NHRA Springnationals at Ohio's Na· tional Trail Raceway. The NMRA Pro Stock Class was run in conjunction with the four· wheelers. Vance, aboard his Vance and Hines Racing/U.S. Suzuki sponsored .GS1100, and Keyte, riding a Kawasaki KZI000 for MTC/Superbike Mike En· gineering. didn't get to their final showdown until 10 p.m. after the program was delayed numerous times by rain. Q.ualifying was led by Vance at 8.875 seconds/150.25 mph with Keyte just a tick bf,hind in elapsed time but faster on top end with a 150.50 top speed. Suzuki riders Bob Carpenter and Joe Folgore took the next two spots. Kawasaki riders Randy Mason, 'Jon Mafaro and Wendell Daniels filled out the field which had been cut thin by the rescheduling. Vance drew a bye for the first round, but laid down a 8.874/149.50 to keep the competition on their toes. Carpenter had 'an easy time with Mafaro as Mafaro, riding the same bike Carpenter had taken NMRA Number One in Pro Stock in 1979, had transmission problems on his run. Keyte advanced to tilt; semis with an 8.888/150,50 pass .. exactly the same as his qualifying run _. to beat trouble plagued Mason. The final round of first eliminations found Folgore taking a solo run when Daniels blew his engine and did not stage for the match. Carpenter gave Vance a scare in their semi as he grabbed the holeshot and Vance had to work hard to rundown Carpenter at the finish. It was 8.8!l5/149.99 for Vance to Carpenter's 8.981/147 .05 losing effon. Keyte won the other semi over Folgore with an 8.962/1,\9.75 pass to Folgore's 10.!l76/1!l7.19.
