Maupin, as be was long gune in both
of the fint two starts of the second
moto only to see the red flag come out
before the moto was half way
concluded. Cintora also had his share
of bad luck as he crashed while leading
the fint moto and had a great
comeback for fifth place. Coke/KRpI
Summer series point leader Keith

moto but still came back for a founh

The fint mota started with Gerig
gfttiDg tM holeshot. ScottJohDlon ran
Iccond with Dale Andenon third.
Gerig and JohDIon quickly moVed int~
a larp lead, with Gerig bolding about
a three biR lead 0ftI' JohDIon. A
much cloIer battlr was goiDg on for
third between Andenon and Garry
Barril. diciDg back and forth until
Barril was able to take 0ftI' with a
comfortable lead. It looked like Gerig
wu guiDg to bold his lead wben the
UDeXpeCted hapPened - with lis laps
to gu be gut a Oat rear tire on the
downhill. JohDlon quickly moved into
first and started to pull away. Gerig
had a big enough lead over third place
Harris to hold second.
In the second moto it was JohDlQn
getting the holeshot, Gerig second and
Harris third. Johnson and Gerig diced
for fmt until Johnson pulled away with
a small lead. On the sixth lap Gerig
moved back up with JohDlOD to
challenge for the lead. Johnson had a
half bike lead going over the top of
Devil's Drop. As they hit and started to
give it full throttle, Gerig blew out his
silencer and Johnson once more pulled
away with a small lead. With only two
laps to go it looked like Johnson would
take the flag and fint overall, but the
unexpected happened again. As
Johnson started up the uphill, his rear
wheel kicked out, sending him to the
ground, and by the time he gut his
bike started Gerig was staning to go
down the other side. Gerig held his
lead to take fint and fint overall with
a tie·breaking 2-1 finish over Johnson'.s
1-2 second overall. Harris was third
with a 5-5.
.In the 250cc Pros, Tim Lunde got
the holeshot and led Bryan Maloney,
Johnson and Gerig founh. It was
Johnson with the fastest line as he
quickly passed Maloney for second.
Johnson then passed Lunde for fint on
the uphill, but Gerig wasn't guing to
sit back and.let Johnson take all of the
glory as he passed both Maloney and
Lunde as they were going down the
downhill. Johnson was still moving
very fut with a seven second lead over
Gerig. He was flying down tM
downhill when bad luck struck,
leaving him, with a broken front
wheel. Gerig and the rest of the field
palled before Johnson was able to get
Ilia bike into the pits. Maloney passed
Lunde on his charge up tM uphill, but
wuo't able to catch Gerig as he
finiIbed with a 26-second lead over
Maloney and Lunde.
AI tM pte fell in round two it was
Geri and Lunde gfttiDg off first with
LU~ getting tM holesbot, Gerig
second and Maloney third. Lunde
held tM lead for the first two laps until
Gerig passed at the top of the uphill,
but Lunde didn't give up, and he
came back to p_ Gerig on the same
• spot of the uphill. Lunde staned to
fade after a long day in the UlUal
Carlsbad heat. Gerig and Maloney,
trailing by only a bike length quickly
took advantage on the downhill to
move to fint and second, leaving
Lunde in third. On the next lap Scott,
Johnson also took advantage of the
situation by passing Lunde. On the
12th lap Maloney was making his
move on Gerig. "I was moving up the
uphill when Maloney came flying by
and he was even riding a wheelie, " said
Gerig later. "He was about a bike's
length ahead. As he staned tq make
tM tum to gu back down, his bike slid
out and I went right into him and over
my ban. By that time I knew that I
had to ItO WFO gO catch him."
On the last I~p Maloney was flying
down the downhill with Gerig only two
bikelengths behind when once more
Maloney slid out, this time at the
bottom of the downhill. This time
Gerig was able to go around and take
fint for fint overall. Maloney was
second, and second overall. Johnson
took third and Lunde's founh was
good for third overall.
