West Germany in September, but as in the previous meets, they lost vital stages and went points at the out finishing . with %6 points behind winnen Denmark (51 points) and England (50 points), with Sweden, only there to make the numben up. scoring nine points. This was a terrific meet with all the riden, except the Swedes. giving lQO% into their racing. Top scorer for the Americans was captain Bruce Penhall with nine points (he also happens to be the favonte to win the World Individual title at Wernbly in September) followed by Schwam and Dennis Sigalos. both on six points. and Kelly Moran with five. The meet was so close all the way through that nobody could predict who the two qualiflen would be. as America's early lead had been wiped out gradually. They went into race 14 three points behind the leader Denmark and equal with England. Ironically, Denmark had only scored two points by the end of heat four of this 16-race program, with America leading on 10 points. England having eight and Sweden four. It was impossible to predict which two nations would go on to the final. as England, Denmark and the Americans are so consistently good on the international scene that it's a pity one had togo. The racing was so close all the way that by the interval, America was leading with 16 points, two more than England's 14 points and three more than Denmark on 15 points. America in fact was the leader or joint leaden in nine out of the 16 heats. They lost that lead in race 10 when Bobby Schwam finished third behind Denmark's Erik Gundersen and England's World Champion Mike Lee. Denmark at this stage got stronger and stronger and took an impressive three·point lead over the Americans. However, England was also in trouble of being eliminated as they also had a , couple of bad results in races 11 and l!. They all went into race 15 with scores: Denmark %4, U.S.A. %2. England 20. and Sweden on a lowly 6. The remaining heats saw the finish of the Americans' hopes of qualifying. England's Dave Jessup rode to a win in race 15 and a brilliant ride took the new British champion Steve Bastable in race 14 to fint a t the checkered flag. Into the penultimate heat. and it all rested on the shoulden of little Kelly Moran with just one point separating each team - Denmark 27. England 26 and U.S.A. 25. Moran had it all to do, but a bad gate saw him trail in last behind a shock winner, Swede Jan Andenson. All hope had not gone for the Americans as they could have still qualif1ed had Bruce Penhall won his last ride and if either Denmark's former World Champion Ole Olsm or the current champion. England's Mike Lee. had finished last. Then there would have been a runoff to see who would progit5i further in the competition, but it wasn't to be as PenhaU was taken very wide by Lee in the first tum and could not make up lost ground. As it turned out, the winner of this race, Olsm, also meaJ;lt that Denmark had won this qualifying round. Lee's second meant that England had also finished in second position and so progressed with Denmark into the final. - d::f Reaults OJALHFlS DENMARK: 31. Ole a-. II Hono _ I l l pILI.
