corner. Parker and Graham (Klotz/
Wiaeco/Shoei/Dellono/Ron Wood HD) ran 1-2 at the end of one lap, five

at the end of the neat, followed by Rob
Crabbe and Steve Morehead.
The third heat aIIo saw the red flag
dilplayed at the end of the fint lap
when Willie Crabbe unloaded hard in
the third tum_ Crabbe was Ihaken,
but did get up under his own power.
Mike .Kidd. who had taken the lead
on the fint Itan. found himself running
second to Peter Hook on the next try.
That lituation lasted exactly one lap
before Kidd applied more wick to the
PJI /Wrangler/Robens/LawwiU Racing Harley to run in front the following
nine timeI around the circuit, eatablilhing a comfonable lead. Hook (H-D)
stayed in second for the remainder of
the ~, and Steve Hall (F.8prit/Klotz/
Full HOUle H-D) ran third from stan
to finish. Jackie Mitchell took founh in
front of Dave Bradley.
The final heat sim'ply belonged to
Steve Eklund. Eklund gated his
Srorme Wilner/Castroll Arai Harley per'
fectly, and was still stretching his lead
10 laps' later. Bubba Shoben (Scott
Machine/Race Ready/Sisemore H-D)
and Hank Scott (Branch/Bames/Sisemore/Dickie/KRW H·D) ran 2·!j on
the fint lap and C?n through the race.
Ted Boody and Terry Poovey c101ed
up on leCond and third as the race
wore on, but finished 4-5.
Semi.
Wayne Rainey had the magic clutch
touch in the fmt semi, jumping into
the point poIition ahead of Ronnie
Jones and Rob Crabbe. Rainey (Sandy
Rainey/Chris Annstrong/ConneUy Machien H-D) led to the checkered for
the IOle transfer. Jones and Crabbe ran
2-!j all the way. A s1~ Steve More·
head waved Randy eo. (who made
the aemi as an alternate) by. but GOBs
could.not improve upon founh place.
Ted Boody made a strong dIon for
the last p" to the National, taking
the aeeond aemi lead over Jackie MiteheU
and Terry Poovey. Poovey (Shoei/Sisemore/Ken Parker H·D) dilplaced
Mitchell on the second lap. On the
third go-around, Poovey made his
move on Boody, a move that found
Boody going off the groove in tum
three, wrestling his bike through the
marbles as he lost three places. Poovey
went on to take the win, followed by
Mitchell and Jay Beach.
Trophyrece
Randy Grou finally got a good stan,
and the defending Grand National
Champ led the Trophy race over Ted
Boody. It only lasted a lap or 10 before
GOBs' luck for the day caught up with
him and he coasted off the track with
machine troubles. Boody took- over his
Arai-sponsored XR, and led to the
checkered flag. Jay Beach held off a
closing Rob Crabbe to take second.
Scott Adanu finished founh, foDowed
by RonnieJones.
NlItIone'
By vinue of the fastest heat time,
Gary Scott had the pole. He used it to
good advantage and was fmt to the
fint tum, with Scott Pearson coming
from the other lide of the front row
and sliding into second. Mike Kidd
and Steve Eklund completed the top
four.with 19 laps to go.
Scott staned to pull out a bit of a
lead as the Klotz/Wiaeco kids. Ricky
Graham and Scon Parker, nestled into
fifth and sixth.
The order was stiD the same at the
midway point, but a lap later Pearson
slid off the groove and lost two poIitions.
A lap later he 1011 two more, and he
would continue to drop back with unknown troubles. eventually finishing
10th.
Now in lleCond, Kidd moved up on
Scott, but only for a brief time before
dropping back and maintaining a secure
second.
On the Uth lap, Eklund apparently
had trouble with a rut in tum one and
slid out. He got up running behind the
pack.
The finishing order Wal was just
about set by the 15th lap.- Scott led,
followed by Kidd, Graham and
Parker. Jorgensen was nex,t. ahead of
Tim Mertens and Peanon. Peter
Hook, Steve Hall, Hank Scott and
Eklund were the other riden Itill on
the same lap. Bubba Shobert and
Wayne Rainey were out of the race
and Terry Poovey had pulled off the
track, then came back on to try and
salvage a few more points.
Scott took the checkered flag fint,
and then later took the checkered for a
tour around the track. "You couldn't
lose concentration out there." said
Scott after a brief encounter with a
champagne bottle. "It was too rough,
too slippery out there. So you had to
keep up the pace. Even though it
looked easy, it was still a lot of work
out there."
Kidd's runner-up fmish moved him
to third in the point standings behind
Scott and Eklund. "My rear tire wore
out a little faster than Gary's," said
Kidd. "I had to 'come up through traffic and by the time I caught up to him,
my rear tire was gone. I probably got
four 01' five inches f~ his rear wheel
about halfway through the race, but
there was nothing I could do because
my rear tire. was gone. I noticed his
was still hooking up, so I turned
around and looked at third place and I
said, 'I'll just have to settle for second
today.'"
.
Graham, who almOlt missed the
program, but instead made the winner'l circle and advanced from 10th to
ninth in the point standings, said "It
was just getting off the line IUper
good, and beiIlJ real mellow, really.
The race track didn't call for good rae. ing; you juat had to be real easy on the
throttle 10 your tireI wouldn't wear
•
out, and have some luck."
