Parker and Graham (Klotz/ Wiaeco/Shoei/Dellono/Ron Wood HD) ran 1-2 at the end of one lap, five laps, and at the end of 10. Likewise, Tun MertenI, riding a BeIIniIIe HondaIponsored Harley, ran third aD the way. Wayne Raiuey, the hoIabot worker on the red-flaam stan. was founh at the end of the neat, followed by Rob Crabbe and Steve Morehead. The third heat aIIo saw the red flag dilplayed at the end of the fint lap when Willie Crabbe unloaded hard in the third tum_ Crabbe was Ihaken, but did get up under his own power. Mike .Kidd. who had taken the lead on the fint Itan. found himself running second to Peter Hook on the next try. That lituation lasted exactly one lap before Kidd applied more wick to the PJI /Wrangler/Robens/LawwiU Racing Harley to run in front the following nine timeI around the circuit, eatablilhing a comfonable lead. Hook (H-D) stayed in second for the remainder of the ~, and Steve Hall (F.8prit/Klotz/ Full HOUle H-D) ran third from stan to finish. Jackie Mitchell took founh in front of Dave Bradley. The final heat sim'ply belonged to Steve Eklund. Eklund gated his Srorme Wilner/Castroll Arai Harley per' fectly, and was still stretching his lead 10 laps' later. Bubba Shoben (Scott Machine/Race Ready/Sisemore H-D) and Hank Scott (Branch/Bames/Sisemore/Dickie/KRW H·D) ran 2·!j on the fint lap and C?n through the race. Ted Boody and Terry Poovey c101ed up on leCond and third as the race wore on, but finished 4-5. Semi. Wayne Rainey had the magic clutch touch in the fmt semi, jumping into the point poIition ahead of Ronnie Jones and Rob Crabbe. Rainey (Sandy Rainey/Chris Annstrong/ConneUy Machien H-D) led to the checkered for the IOle transfer. Jones and Crabbe ran 2-!j all the way. A s1~ Steve More· head waved Randy eo. (who made the aemi as an alternate) by. but GOBs could.not improve upon founh place. Ted Boody made a strong dIon for the last p" to the National, taking the aeeond aemi lead over Jackie MiteheU and Terry Poovey. Poovey (Shoei/Sisemore/Ken Parker H·D) dilplaced Mitchell on the second lap. On the third go-around, Poovey made his move on Boody, a move that found Boody going off the groove in tum three, wrestling his bike through the marbles as he lost three places. Poovey went on to take the win, followed by Mitchell and Jay Beach. Trophyrece Randy Grou finally got a good stan, and the defending Grand National Champ led the Trophy race over Ted Boody. It only lasted a lap or 10 before GOBs' luck for the day caught up with him and he coasted off the track with machine troubles. Boody took- over his Arai-sponsored XR, and led to the checkered flag. Jay Beach held off a closing Rob Crabbe to take second. Scott Adanu finished founh, foDowed by RonnieJones. NlItIone' By vinue of the fastest heat time, Gary Scott had the pole. He used it to good advantage and was fmt to the fint tum, with Scott Pearson coming from the other lide of the front row and sliding into second. Mike Kidd and Steve Eklund completed the top four.with 19 laps to go. Scott staned to pull out a bit of a lead as the Klotz/Wiaeco kids. Ricky Graham and Scon Parker, nestled into fifth and sixth. The order was stiD the same at the midway point, but a lap later Pearson slid off the groove and lost two poIitions. A lap later he 1011 two more, and he would continue to drop back with unknown troubles. eventually finishing 10th. Now in lleCond, Kidd moved up on Scott, but only for a brief time before dropping back and maintaining a secure second. On the Uth lap, Eklund apparently had trouble with a rut in tum one and slid out. He got up running behind the pack. The finishing order Wal was just about set by the 15th lap.- Scott led, followed by Kidd, Graham and Parker. Jorgensen was nex,t. ahead of Tim Mertens and Peanon. Peter Hook, Steve Hall, Hank Scott and Eklund were the other riden Itill on the same lap. Bubba Shobert and Wayne Rainey were out of the race and Terry Poovey had pulled off the track, then came back on to try and salvage a few more points. Scott took the checkered flag fint, and then later took the checkered for a tour around the track. "You couldn't lose concentration out there." said Scott after a brief encounter with a champagne bottle. "It was too rough, too slippery out there. So you had to keep up the pace. Even though it looked easy, it was still a lot of work out there." Kidd's runner-up fmish moved him to third in the point standings behind Scott and Eklund. "My rear tire wore out a little faster than Gary's," said Kidd. "I had to 'come up through traffic and by the time I caught up to him, my rear tire was gone. I probably got four 01' five inches f~ his rear wheel about halfway through the race, but there was nothing I could do because my rear tire. was gone. I noticed his was still hooking up, so I turned around and looked at third place and I said, 'I'll just have to settle for second today.'" . Graham, who almOlt missed the program, but instead made the winner'l circle and advanced from 10th to ninth in the point standings, said "It was just getting off the line IUper good, and beiIlJ real mellow, really.
