Harrison injured;
Scherb wins

Ross Downs ST
By Michael S. Lussem
COLLEYVILLE, TX,JUNE 12
Once again, the flat trackers of
north Texas watched the stonn
clouds brewing this. week. Torrential rains fell in the Ft.
Wonh/Dallas area earlier in the week
and
intermittent
showers
feU
Saturday, but by race time, the Ross
Downs shon track was tacky and
raceable. Promoter Bob BagweU
commented that as long as the track
was safe, racing would continue.
The threatening weather reduced
the weekly entries, but thoee who came
came to race! The heats were marred
somewhat as 250cc Sportsman rider
Greg Harrison, on his Remington
Enterprilea XR Honda, got out of
shape on the grandstand straightaway
and put himself and his machine
through the fence right in front of the
fans. The bike found iuelf under a van
parked nearby, and Harrison was next
to it. A late repon from the hospital
indicated that number eight was
bruised but would be released on
Sunday.

The Micro Mini c1Ul1 saw a
dynamite contest as young Scotty
Williams, aboard his Soul Man's BarB-Que Suzuki, literaUy flew around
the quaner-mile oval. Kris Wise on his
Cornwall Tool's hal-Jet held down
second for mOlt of the race, but the
youngster got a bit confused, thought
the penalty line was the finish line and
stopped short of the checken. By the
time he 'realized his mistake, Tim Kay
on his Motorcycle Specialties Suzuki
had cnJlllleCi the line, and Wise was
credited with third.
The BOcc c1Ul1 had one of the larger
fields of the evening with seven riders
taking the line for the main. Thineenyear-old Scottie Scherb, out of San
Antonio's N.W. Honda, put on a real
style show as he broadalid his CR
Honda shontracken to the first of two
wins for the night. Cloee on his wheeb
for a couple of laps were Alan Powers
(Yam) and MAPS Distributing/
Caner's Yamaha-sponsored Michael
Hale. But Powen and Hale just could
not cope with the Honda power.
The 250cc Sportsman go brought
out the Soul Man's Bar-B-Que team
leader Jimmy Tarlton and his Bul'taco.
Tarlton, who has come !l long way in
the Iut couple of years, had no easy
time of it as he battled back attempts
by DaUas Yamaha-sponsored Tubby
Dotson and Scherb. Tarlton and
Douon were wheel to wheel for the
majority. of the race with Tarlton
dOling the door on Dotson at every
tum. But Dotson would get his

The 250cc Expert c1Ul1 saw a couple
of newcomers to the ROIl Downs track
this year. OdeU Davis, who had been a
familiar figure in years past, made it
to the main, but it looked like there
was a little rust ·on his sltilb as he
finished weU out of the money. Joining
Davis for the first time at Ross Downs
this year was David Bradley out of
Tulsa, OK. Although it was his first
time here in a long while, Bradley
knew his way around this panicular
abon track. He powered his Oflixcobacked Bultaco through the field of 10
riders for the win. Yamaha-mounted
Mark Neimi and Sammy Sweet
threatened Bradley several times but
just could not get by the Tulsan.
The roar of four strokes heightened
the pulse of the fans as the Open
Experts took to the track. Though the
field was smaU, there was a real·
diversity. of machinery present as
Yamaha 750s and 500s competed
against a lone Triumph. And that
lonely' Triumph, ridden by Sammy
Sweet out of Houston, really sparkled
as it took the class win.
The best and closest race of the
evening capped another week at Ross'
Downs as the Grand Finale contenders
took the track. Representatives from
the 250cc Sportsman, 250cc Expe!1
and Open Expert classes met for an
outstanding contest. Official starter
Eddie McCoy handicapped the
Experts by almost a half a lap as he
arranged the racen down the
grandstand straight. Although the big
advanta~ was given to the 250cc
Sportsmen" it wasn't long until the
250cc Experts had eaten. up the
distance and were knocking on the
door. Expen riders David Bradley and
Alan Black pushed Sportsman class
standouts Tubby Douon and Jimmy
Tarlton lap after lap, On lap seven,
Bradley tried to go low around
Tarlton, caught a rut and went off the
track.
This
maneuver
stanled
Tarlton and while he was catching his
breath, Alan Black and his Yamaha
went high and by, The final two laps
were axle to axle between Black and
Douon. At the line it was Dotson by
