IIOI'ed by MTC and Ron Turner Cycles.
Turner topped a large field of Pro
Stockers on his new GSllOO, the bike
he debuted only one month ago. New
eighth-mile record holder Mike Keyte
claimed both the ela~ time and
mile per hour records 1D Pro Stock at
5.61/125.68. However, Gerry Korman
sidelined Keyte by a holeshot in the
second round. Mike recorded a 5.901
116.42 in a losing effort to Korman's
5.97/117.80. Korman, a crewman and
Turner narrowly escaped serious injury
prior to Korman's scheduled semi
against Turner. Korman's crew member was atop Gerry's Pro Stock Kawa·
saki when tbey started the engine and
it jumped in gear, spilling the crewman
on the asphalt. The bike lunKed over
Turner's wheelie bars and craShed into
track owner Jessee Ballew's track car.
Both bike and car sustained some
damage, but ~ost importantly no one
was hurt. Turner took a solo run' in
that semi as a result.
Sunshine Nationals champ Russ
Nyberg drew Regency Kawasaki sponsored Barry Kogut, and the Bucklerl
Nyberg Kawasaki mounted rookie's'
5.85/122.11 wasn't enough against
Kogut's 5.76/122.95.
Kogut's better time and mph - 5.841
12!l.45 - lost to a quicker reaction
time on the line by Turner. Ron took
the eliminator with that holeshot at
5.94/122.44. "He just got me on the
line and in the eighth-mile you don't
have time to catch up," said Kogut.
"How sweet it is," said Turner. "Barry
had a better elapsed time and top
speed, but we just ripped a holeshot on
him."
Low qualifier Terry Kizer, sponsored by MTC, rolled his Kawasaki to victory lane in Funny Bike Eliminator. Kizer grabhed a 5.18/1!l5.95
in his semi with Charles Israel. Star
Cycle sponsored Israel's losing effort
was 5.40/UO.54. John Sands matched
up with Murdock Racing's Vince Santangelo in the other semi. Vince had
broken second gear after replacing the
transmission once on Saturday. Santangelo couldn't overcome the gear
problems and lost the semi.
Terry Kizer then backed-up his 5.18
record pass with a 5.20/U5.95 run
defeating Sands' Honda in the final.
Joe Waldrip, sponsored by Kawasaki
of Pollt County and Custom Performance Kawasaki, rolled to a new
record in the Pro Comp E1iniinator in
a bitter sweet run. Waldrip was paired
against Geoff Masters, sponsored by
Krol Racing, in round one of eliminations. Masters arrived at the big end
fmt, sidelining Waldrip with his new
mph record of 12!l.62. Masters was
trailered in that round twO by veteran
Wayne Buckler. Former Pro St.ocker
challeuger Bucltler, sponsored by
Buclt\er Nyberg, advanced to the final
by dropping Masters with a 5.761
121.11 to Masters' 5.811121.1!l.
The other semi paired MTC sponsored Buddy Stevenson against Star
Cycle sporwo.ed Charles Israel. Stevenson dropped fellow Kawasaki pilot
Israel as Israel bogged on the line leaving an open ride for Buddy.
Stevenson took the final as Buckler
broke before staging and Stevenson
ran a solo 5.6!l/125.!l4.
Amateur eliminators offered their
share of excitement as Terry Miller's
Honda got away from him off the starting line. dropping him on the
pavement aoo breaking his collarbone.
Later Sunday, during finals Bob Hanna, sponsored by Farmington Cycle
Works, took Stock Eliminat.or.
F10yd Huntz reeled in Modified Eliminator. Huntz sidelined Keith Lynn
