th~ top thr~~ places. Four-tim~ wom~n's champion of Belgium, Dani~le Picard, took an American Hondato the runner-up slot with her g-5 placings whil~ form~r multi-tim~ surfing champion Joyce Hoffman Lancor card~ a 5-6 for third. Drl~nding champ Ded~ Cates suffer~ a spill in th~ first moto that left her unable to continu~. Th~ Suzuki s~ter came back to win t~ ~ond moto going away, though. Gates ~nd~ up ll!th overall. Run as a p~lud~ to tbe ~I-Ray U.S. Grand Prix th~ next day and film~ by ABC's Wi4e World of Sports, the race was for 1l!5cc Experts only. Championships in l!50cc Ex~n and all oth~r classes will be decid~d on August gO at Carlsbad. Cates took the lead sbonly after th~ start of the first moto and immediately start~ to build a lead. On the ~ond tour around the rough GP course, though, misfortun~ struck. "I just lost my concentration, hit tins bank and went over the bars," she said later. Due to a tweak~ knee and back, she retired from the moto. Suzuki-mount~ Kim Douglass took the reins at that point and sta~d out front for the rest of the race. Despite her hands and forearms cramping from having to fan the clutch on her stock bike, Holman t~ in a secondplace ride follow~ by Picard who mov~ up from about a sixth-place stan. Nancy Lewis took her Suzulti to fourth with Hoffman Lancor fifth at the checker~. After a 15-minute break to allow the ABC helicopter to refuel, thq Iin~ up again for a slightly shoner 15minute-plus-one-Iap moto. Suzukimount~ Cindy Dumo I~ the pack around the first tuni clearly in front with Do~ne Jean Payne on a Yamaha tuck~ in ~hind. Disregarding the pain from her first-moto tumble, Cates mov~ up quickly, zipping by Dumo as they ~ down the shan straight following Rattlesnake Gulch. Later on the o~ning lap, Dumo got nudged into a fence which caught her bars, tearing the clutch lever and left grip off. She fiiliShed 14th in the moto. As they came around to complete one lap, Payne held about three bike lengths on Cates. Then ca~e a slight gap ~fore Holman ap~ar~ with Hoffman Lancor, Picard and Yamaha rider Tina Clary following. Cates put Payne away shortly after that and said good-bye as she ~ away from the field. Payne held firm in second but coupled with her first moto DNF (her bike seized), would only get 14th overall. Holman kn~w she didn't have to beat CateS to g~t the overall, but wasn't so sure about Payne which worri~ her for a bit. "In th~ last moto, I didn't have to ~at Dede; I had to ~at Kimmi and I wasn't sure who else. I was hoping it wasn't that girl behind Dede, then my dad signaled, 'You got itl' so I just cru~d," the Texan said later. Picard got by Clary on lap two but seem~d to fade towards the end due, ~rhaps, to the unfamiliar heat. Clary went by th~ Belgian a lap ~fore-the end with Hoffman Lancor a ShOTt distance behind those two. MeTc~es Gonzales ran a solid seventh on her Suzuki with Yamaha-mounted Kathy Wall, Kim Bozik and Donna Gilio rounding out the top 10. • pr~~ CRll!5R Results 12Scc EXPERT: 1.
