S~ncer worked on Chris Hipp and got by for third, and Rick Black· well (Yam) cam~ from way back to tak~ fifth away from Mik~ Hipp. Going into t~ final moto, ~ stand· ings ~ so c1~ that this on~ rac~ would dttid~ th~ ~ries among thr~ contm~; Spmcer, Cordova and Rhotm. With best six·out·of·~ight moto scoring, th~ pit cnws sha~n~d thdr pmcils as t~ rac~ started with a Chris Hipp holeshot that ~Id up until h~ f~1I to fifth on th~ third lap. Rak~· straw thm led, but trernmdous pressun from Spmce-r, Rhot~n and Cordova put him back to fourth on~ lap lat~r. Evm th~ most casual onlook~r would b~ strUck by th~ int~nsity of th~ th~ I~a~ as th~ banged th~ ~nns and ~ach other, with S~nc~r at the point ~~ th~ championship. Sudd~n1y, on lap six, S~nc~r slowed at th~ hu~ ~t of doubl~ jumps coming out of th~ back ~ction, and Cordova and Rhot~n literally fl~ ov~r him, one on ~ach sid~. Cordova got a ~tter driv~ off th~ jump, blocked Rhotm in th~ n~xt com~r, and in two seconds w~nt from third to firstl S~ncer cam~ by with a flat on th~ rar, no doubt having a coupl~ of unpun thoughts running through his h~lm~t but still riding as fast as h~ could without falling. COI'dova h~ld off Rhot~n th~ rest of th~ way, whil~ S~nc~r struggl~d to an ~ighth-plac~ finish. Rhot~n's 1-2 earned him th~ day's ov~rall win ahead of Rakestraw (2-4), Blackwell (5-5), Cordova (8-1), Chris Hipp (4·5) and S~nc~r (5-8). In th~ ~es tally, Rho~n won by on~ point with 2·2·5-2·1-2 motos (155 points), Sttond w~nt to S~ncer (1·6·2· 1-1-5, 152 points); and Cordova ~nd~d up third (5-1-1-2-7-1, 151 points). Rhot~n also sw~t th~ day's O~n Ex~rt motos, but S~nc~r, by going 2-5, SttUr~d th~ class titl~. S~ncer's winning total of 144 points (1-1-2-1-1· 2) was thr~ ~tter than Rhot~n's 141 points (2-2-2-1·1·1). David Stutts (Yam) took third in th~ ~es with a fine 5-2 rid~ at Austin and 102 point total. Chris Hipp was fourth at Austin and th~ sarn~ In th~ ~es with 99 points. Th~ 125cc Ex~rt bash was a h~art bnak~1: for David Jones wh~ brilliant wins in pr~vious ~ries races ~t him up for Austin wher~ h~ would only hav~ to finish 4·5 or ~tt~r to math~matcially diminat~ ~ryon~ d~ for th~ stat~ titl~. Th~ first moto buzzed out of th~ stadium·styl~ gates with Randy Sullivan out front aboard his n~ Suzuki, trailed c10sdy by J~rry Sur~r, Jr- (Yam), Ricky Collins (Suz) and Scooter Stafford (Suz). With Jones mired in th~ pack, Stafford got busy and moved into first on lap four, I~ading Sullivan, Sur~r and Mark Rakestraw (Yam)_ Thrtt laps lat~r, Surbfi dropped out with motor troubl~, but most ~ w~n on Stafford's I~ading charg~ and Jones' succession of crash - catch up - run off t~ track - catch up - crash and catch up again. Amazingly, Jones and his RM ~~n still in on~ pitt~ by th~ md of th~ race and about to catch Rakestraw for third. Jones had his fourth plac~ finish. Sullivan ~ated his holeshot to kick off th~ final, but this tim~, Staf· ford and Jones w~n hot on th~ trail and by th~ fourth lap w~n on~·two. Th~ only ~pl~ not watching this race w~n in th~ johns, and ~~n th~y w~re looking out the v~nts. Jones wanted to ~at th~ kid from Louisiana, and although a moto Sttond would hav~ put th~ championship in his pock~t, Jones was going for it all t~ way. By th~ ~ighth lap, things w~r~ nally ~t ting int~ting wh~n t~ chain brok~ off Jones' Suzuki, and for th~ Sttond ~ar in a row, Scoot~r Stafford had won th~ T~xas Smes in 125cc Ex~rt. Sttond on th~ day was Randy Sullivan (2-2), ah~ad of Rakestraw (5·5) and Ricky Collins (5·4).
