"It's survival, man," were the
words of Suzuki and Dunlop
sponsored Frank Stacy after
conquering the elements and
the competition to take overall honors
in the final round of the Two·Day
Qualifier Series.
Only ten of the 121 riders entered in
the event completed the first day
course of 190 miles. Heavy rains began
on Friday evening and continued
throughout Saturday. Mike Binkley of
the organizing club, Cross Country
Enterprises, said before the event,
"We want our run to be tough like day
three or four at last year's ISDE in
France. Too many riders go to Six
Days not knowing what to really
expect."
Various adjustments were made
before the stan of day one which
included cutting out some potentially
tough and dangerous sections. In
addition, the time schedule used was
the slowest. However, the time allotted
between some of the checks was still
unrealistic, particularly under such
wet conditions, A number of sections
had speed averages greater than 40
mph.
"It's asinine." said Suzuki's John
Morgan in reference to the trail pace.
The Last Chance was forced to
conclude after a single disastrous first
day. To that point it was a true test of
man, machine and luck.
''The water's really bad," said Stacy
after managing to ·10Ie only eight
minutes on the trail aboard his Drew
Smith-prepared Suzuki PE!50. "1
couldn't go the pace and realistically
hope to make it." Stacy clocked in the
quickest time in the two special tests
and the acceleration test,
