Malberbe was Belgian %SOcc National Champion at age 16. He moved on to compete first in tbe l!Scc, then %SOcc and finally SOOcc class World Championshipe finishing sixth in 1978, third m 1979 and taking the title in 1980. His arch·rival this seuon for the top spot in this ferocioua1y contested big bore cI. . is tbe 1979 SOOcc World Champion. %4-year-old Graham Noyce of England who also races for Team Honda. Noyce was sidelined for much of last season with injuries. The former Schoolboy motOC1'Ollller, who staned racing at age 10. wants the title back. Noyce will be on form for Carlsbad. He likes the track and needs the win. Belgian Andre Vromans. %5. whose father was a top National rider for many years. began his racing career at the ripe old age of 16 when a knee injury took away from his first love. football (1IOCCeI'). Andre. like Lackey. spent mOlt of his career on tbe big bore machinery. The top contenders on this side of the Atlantic (right next to the Pacific ocean, in fact) are led this year by %1year-old veteran and three time National I%Scc Champion. Broc Glover who hai1s from San Diego. California, juIt !8 miles IOUth of Carlsbad. There's no doubt about it. Young Glover is hot right now. He has won all four of the SOOCC Nationals so far this season, topping seven out of eight motosl Can be beat the seasoned European riders, as well as the top American riders in his first SOOcc Grand Prix outing? At %4, Danny LaPone has the 1979 SOOcc National Championship under his belt and is the only rider to top Glover so far this season. LaPorte would like to improve his last year's second overall position at Carlsbad by one spot. The personable Honda racer could pull it off if the gremlins which affected him in his last two Carlsbad outings disappear. The European riders travel the 7,000 miles to California to earn imponant series points in this richest of all SOOcc Grand Prix events. Interestingly, this "continental circus" covers more ground than Formula 1 car racing and is one of the most respected forms of racing throughout Europe. Spectators can meet the stars and see the ultra -trick factory machines close-up the day before the race, Saturday, June %0. from 9:50 a.m. to noon at the Cumno Rea! shopping center just off Highway 78 (tum off I40S just south of Oceanside). There's also the Women', l!Scc Motocross National. Saturday morning at Carlsbad Raceway. Timed practice for the GP riders determines tbe starting lineup for Sunday's race on Saturday afternoon. Will an American pull off the win for the second year in a row against this season's tough competition? Most American riders agree that the energy from the crowd is a real plus, so plan to show up early at Carlsbad.
