00 O"l For Bob Hannah. it was a bittersweet day. Despite fine 1-2 rides and the overall win. rival Howerton claimed the 250cc National crown for the HCOnd year. school except a million times worse," he said. Indeed, the pain was apparently fleeting as he was back up and underway in less than a minute to finish 15th. Turner was fouTth ("Feels good to get in the top five, especially when all the rest are works bikes. ") for his best finish of the series with Bigelow fifth. Jeff Hicks, Dave Hollis, DG Honda rider Jim Tarantino and Key· stone KTM ace Andy Stacy filled out the top 10 moto spots. 500cc National The gate dropped for the first 500cc moto with Sun, Glover, Brek.er, Bell and Shulu creating dust storms in front. At the end of the first lap, Bell and Shulu had both slipped past Breker while Maico's Alan King and Arlo Englund moved into slots 617. Sun and Glover began to go at it, hammering at each other with neither having a marked advantage. The pace of their fight started to pull them away from Bell and Breker. who took over fourth when Shulu dropped out. "I wasn't sure how fast to go," Sun said afterward. "He' (Glover) came up on me, then I'd pull away. I'd start cruising then he'd pull up on me and I'd puIJ out a little bit. "He made a charge right at the end. He was going like a couple seconds faster, and he snuck around me before I got going again." It was evident that the final few laps would bring a showdown. Glover would try to get a wheel inside of Sun, but hold on. Coming into the fmal corner before the checkered flag, Glover had the ad· vantage, though ever so slight. "I was hoping for the best," Sun said. "I wanted to keep right on him, right to the last hoping the door would open up, and he went wide. I shot to the inside and threw a little block pass. I never touched him or anything." Glover explained, "Well, I kind of thought I had it, and I snoozed. What really happened was a hard decision for me to make because I wasn't sure whether to go outside and try to cut in and hold him, or if I went to the inside, I thought maybe Chuck would square me off. So I went to the outside and there was a lapper between us. I set off too early for the lapper and I had to regas it, and by that time, Chuck had the drive on me, and he just slipped in there. "I did the same thing to him a half a lap earlier, and he rode his heart out and so did I, that's for sure. Both motos, we rode as hard as we could." Sun got the win with his last corner pass while Glover shook his head while undou btedly chastising himself. Bell and Breker followed some distance back with King holding off Husky's Bill Grossi· for fifth. Arlo Englund finished seventh over Sun's teammate Danny LaPorte with Marty Smith taking his factory Suzuki to ninth in front of Boo Stichter. In the final moto of the day, the rain had stopped, but black clouds were building up, ready to unleash their cold contents. (It rained and hailed after the races were completed.) The dark clouds were probably an omen of sorts. Shultz took the lead for the first lap followe<\ by Sun and Glover. The next time around, though it was Glover in the lead with Sun and King behind. A large hole in the track pitched Shulu off, breaking a knee cup in his leathers, but not seriously injuring him. The same hole collected Breker the lap before and would catch a couple of other riders before things got less congested there. Glover and Sun quickly started to move away from the pack and make it their own race. This time, however, Sun couldn't quite get close enough to make any successful passes like he did in moto one. Get close enough until late in the moto, that is. The last 10 minutes of the race ran very close as Glover misread his pit board and ran into a group of lapped riders. Both things let Sun close to with· in a few seconds. "I didn't even know where Chuck was until he was alongside of me," said Glover. "Up to that point, Chuck gave it everything he had and so did I, and for the last two laps, it was lik.e a sprint race. That's what it was. I was determined to gas it as hard as I could." Glover held him off in those final laps to secure the overall with Sun fin· ishing second. "I've got to hand it to him," said Sun in the pits later, "he's got a lot of determination." Bell was a distant third again, after working up a bit from the pack puzzled tbat the two leaders were able to pull away from him like they did. Smith was fourth ahead of King, though overall their positions were the opposite. LaPorte bad held fifth until his chain broke midway through the race. Rounding out the top 10 spots were Englund, Rhyan, DiStefano, Husky's Gary Pustelak and Clark Jones, and Yamaha·mounted Maby Mcintyre. • Results 2SOoc NATlONAl: 1. Bob _ (Yom) 1-2; 2.
