Despite the fast company, three riden - Mike Clemenu, Bryan Taylor and Jack Beckham - made dean sweeps of their respective classes. Blistering heat and oppressive dust were problems late in the day, but racing action stayed as hot as the sunshine. Out of the gate, Ricky Collins grabbed the advantage in the fint 12:'cc Expen moto. Mike Clements was hot on Collins' rear fender and last week's Intermediate winner, Eddy Coker, put his Suzuki into third. Clements set up Collins and pulled into the lead in the last corner of the fint lap and pulled a secure lead. Clements has a very distinct riding style that would make him a wanted man if it was against the law to murder berms; he really hits the turns. Clements won securely, followed by Collins and Mark Brown. Clements won the second mota wire to wire with Col1ins playing shadow a second time. Chris Loftin took third place from Brown in the second moto, but Brown took third for the day. Bandera's "F1yin' Bryan" Taylor has become almost legendary in recent months as he has destroyed all comen while riding 12:" and 2505. Taylor reaffirmed his superiority by laying waste to the 2:'0cc Expert class, besting a fast field that included factory support riden Rick Blackwell and Mickey Pizzatola. When the l!:'Occ Experts crowded into the flTSt turn, Pizzatola had stuffed his Kawasaki into the lead, Kevin McMillan and Taylor put themselves into second and third, but McMillan didn't get to enjoy second for long. Taylor dispatched McMillan and began to move in on Pizzatala. As the two riden came down the big straight, Taylor cut inside and blasted the berm right in front of Pizzatola. Taylor stayed on the gas and wheelied all the way around the tum, showing Mickey his rear fender as well as a lesson in perfect bloclr. passing. McMillan clung doggedly to third until something happened to Pizzatola late in the moto when he suddenly slowed, leuing McMillan and Tom Curry move their Honda water· pumpen into second and third. Positions remained the same till the finish. The long green Kawasaki of Mickey Pizzatola crested the start hill in the lead for the 1W"C0nd time with Taylor's Suzuki and Blackwell's Yamaha in tow. Taylor quiclr.ly took command and was never headed. Blackwell and Pizzatola had their own battle going on until Blackwell pulled away late in the moto. Pizzatola seemed to slow and could not hold off William Phee's Husky. Phee took over third on the last lap. In the Open Expert rounds, Jack Beckham proved himself invinceable at yet another central Texas track. Before the start, Beckham wasn't sure how he would fare, having never ridden his Maico in sand. David Beckham, Jack's brother, grabbed the holeshot on a brand new 4:'0 Honda. Jack Beckham began the moto in fourth but moved into the lead on the second lap after which he was never challenged. Beckham rode smooth and fast, looking totally in control. Galveston Honda ace Tom Curry made his second-ever appearance on a 4:'0 Honda and rode his new bike to second in the fint mota followed by Doug Paley (490 Maico) and Husky support rider Kevin Horton. David Beckham got in the way of brother Jack in the fi~ tum of the second moto, and Curry gassed his Honda into the lead. Beckham Oack) got away in second and began to put the pressure on Curry. Curry was the only rider to success· fully ride two classes in the oppressive heat and had to run the 2:'0 and Open Expert motos back to back. Curry began showing the effecu of riding two motos, and Beckham moved into the lead, outpowering Curry on a straight· away. Beckham went on to a powerful win. Curry held a secure second tiJI he fell, letting Horton get within striking range. Down the straight, Curry seemed to tire when actually he had seized his Honda. The bike continued but was slowed considerably, and Curry eventually drop~d to sixth. . Kevin Horton finIShed a sohd second followed by Russell Miksch (490 Maico) and Mike Farmer (Yam).
