AM A 2S 0/S 00. cc National Championship MX Series: . Rounds 8/4 Hannah and Glover take the day, Howerton grabs 2S0cc title By Mark Kariya CASTL E ROCK, CO,JU NE 14 The fina l roun d of the AMA 250cc Nati onal Championship Motocross Series fell to Yamaha's Bob "Hu rrica ne" Han nah, mar king his second victory in as man y weeks and his third in the for series, but the day belong ed equall y to rival Kent Howe rton, S uk' 'd T as t h e earn UZ 1 n er sue· eessfully defend ed his title in the class with a conservative third in moto one and a win in moto two for second overall at CDR Tech Track. Hannah 's teamm ate Broc Glover waged a stirring pair of battles with Honda' s Chuck Sun in the 500cc races, each garneri ng a win and a second. . . . . ond mot~ to make .it four in a row the EI CajOD, CA, nder ~bo has p~ extremely adept at making the transltion from the U5cc buzz bombs he raced last year to the 5005. Any anticip ated duel here between Hanna h and Howert on failed to materia1ize as both had differen t game plans. Hanna h needed two wins with Howert on finishing no better than 18th in either moto to claim the 250cc title. He went for it with fine 1·2s, but sure to avoid . any direct confron tations if he could avoid it. "I didn't want to race or get knocked down or anythin g; I don't need that anymo re," said the Rhinestone Cowboy. Howertol\ scored a total of !l89 points in the series to best Hannah 's !J45. In third with 289 was Donnie Hansen who put his factory Honda with the leaden all day .and scored third with a 2·!I. In the 500cc points chase, Glover and Sun mainta ined their distance, each scoring 47 points. Glover now has 194 to Sun's 159. Mike Bell, by virtue of his !I.!I placiogs for third, moved to third with 128 pointa, displacing Kawasaki's Goat Breker (who ran fourth in moto one and crashed out early in moto two) at 126. Promot er Ben Cox laid out a challenging track, used for the very fim time today, over graa-covered pasture land utilizing the hills (what else is there in a Rocky Mounta in state?) adjacent to and overlooking CDR Tech Track's drag strip and road course. One pan of the coune droppe d steeply down toward the drag strip, made a sharp left at the bottom and headed back up. A small jump halfway up made it tricky to negotia te and some riden looped it or had to push up this mini hill climb. It was a big bike course. About the only thing that detract ed from the circuit was the extrem e dust despite watering the night before. After the fim set of motCII was comple ted, though , it began to rain. which made conditi ons aImCllt ideal for the riden. For the. estimat ed 9000 specato n, it only made it wet and cold, and many milled the fine racing that took place in the second motCII. Prellm l..... ..
