TEN YEARS Gett:he ES OTI AGO ,. Canadian Dave Schl picked up another AMA Grand National Championship half mile win, this time doing the deed at Terre Haute, IN. Behind the Harley· Davidson rider, Triumph·mounted Don Castro had his hands full lr.eeping his second place spot safe from Bart Markel (H-D). Defending Grand National Champ Gene Romero (Tri) placed fourth. The Junior race was dominated by Yamaha pilot Kenny Roberts. The country's top enduro and ISDT riders were found scurrying through the Oregon hills in search of gold at the Trask Mountain Two-Day ISDT Quali· fier. Riding new six-speed 125 Pentons, Jeff Penton, Dick Burleson and Jack Penton placed 1-2-3 overall. Jack Lehto (Hus) topped John Penton (Hus) in the Open class, Californians Carl Berggren (Hus) and Jay Tullia (Han) placed 1-2 in the 350cc class, Ossamounted Charlie Vincent bested Ossa teammate Don Cutler in the 250cc class, and Gerald Pacholke won the 175cc class on a Puch. An annual, natural high in motocross was experienced in the form of the annual Mammoth Mountain Motocross. California's top riders swarmed to the High Sierra course, and BuItaco riders Dave Rodgers and Tom R.app finished 1·2 in the 125cc Senior class, with Gene Cannady (DKW) third. Young Marty Tripes rode a Rickman/Montesa to the 250cc Senior win over Bill Clements (Hus) and Bryar Holcomb (Mai). Clements returned in the 500cc Senior race and topped Jim West (Hus) and Bill Silverthorn (Hus). Indoor short track racing brought over 6000 people into the Boston Gardens, where they watched Keith Mashburn (Yam) win the Yamaha Silver Cup race. Don Castro placed second in front of Kenny Roberts. In an ACA road race at Carlsbad, CA, George Kerker (Nor) won Heavyweight Production. Kerker warned would-be passees of his presence with a blast from a police siren mounted on his bike. Speedway racing made its first appearance at Ventura County Fairgrounds. The Brothers Bast - Mike in front of Steve thU time - took the top two spots in the Scratch main. Les Chankey won the Handicap main with Mike Bast finishing second. Giacomo Agostini won the 226.4-rnile Isle of Man Senior TT, averaging 102.59 mph on his MV Augusta. At 10M, Phil Read won his first 250cc TT, turning in one lap at 100.08 mph. Pat Owens, for many years 'Western Operations Service Manager for Triumph, and also a tuner on the National circuit, joined the teaching staff at Los Angeles Trade-Tech.
