Cloutier conquers Janesville MX By Marv Knox, Jr. JANESVILLE, CA, MAY 17 In their first race of the year, now also under AMA sanction, Janesville got off to an excellent start. Along with a good sized Frank CioIkoaz leeds John- Mc:Ceuley In 125cc Intermediate at Huron. support from the motorcycling com· munity. The Seattle Cossacks Motorcycle Stunt Team punctuated the festivity with three outstanding shows of preci: sion and trick riding. The group uses hardtail Harleys and Indians, vintage 1957·47, with hand shift and suicide clutches. These big fat·tired V . twins will ride hands·off and idle forever with one to 15 riders on their backs, building pyramids, hanging off in dancers' arabesques, doing head and handstands, what~r feels good. These guys practice day in and day out to take the field and make it look easy, gri~ing, joking with each other and havtngfun. Bill Spencer, wearing that look of contented exhaustion, summed up the event, "We had a good turnout, good enough to do it again. Next year, though, we want to make a special ef· fort to reach the young and inexperienced riders, the ones who really need the expomre to training and safe·riding tips. " I i ! Sllhanek smokes HuronMX By Jerry Parsons HURON, CA, MAYl!4 Huron Cycle Park hosted its last day race of the season with Chris McCauley (125cc Intermediate) and Allen Silhanek (125cc Pro) both taking home gold. 56 The 125« Intermediates got off the line fut and furiously with McCauley grabbing an early lead. Frank Ciolkosz (Yam) and John McCauley (Suz) both held tight running second and third. Jeff Davia (Suz) held fourth with George Galindo (Suz) knocking at his back door. Chris McCauley was now stretching out an untouchable lead with his brother running third hehind Ciolltosz. Kenny Bookout (from Book· out DatlWl) was rapidly moving through the pack and had now moved in be· hind Galindo as they both moved by Davia. Chris McCauley took his lead tl? the checkered for the fint moto win. Ciolltosz and John McCauley took second and third with Bookout moving by Galindo to take fourth. The aecond moto got underway with Galindo taking command followed by Ciolkosz and Chris McCauley. Chris, unhappy in third, soon put Ciolltosz behind to deal with John McCauley who was running fourth. Chris wasted no time as he shot by a downed Galindo to steal the lead. Ciolkosz and John McCauley now held second and third as they too got by Galindo. Chris McCauley continued to lead which gave him the moto win and the overall victory for the day. Ciolkosz finished second with John McCauley taking home third. The Il!5cc Pros picked up the pace as Bill Bogdanivich grabbed the holeshol. Chris Benincasa and David Manhire both held tight to Bogdanivich's rear fender. Allen Silhanek was moving through the pack and was now in fourth position ahead of Jim Keese (Yam). Eddie Perry (Yam) was also on a hot streak and moved into the top five. Perry soon moved by Keese and was looking for Silhanek. The hunt was short as Perry soon overtook Silhanek and headed straight for Manhire and Benincasa. Bogdanivich continued to hold his lead as he began to power away from the pack. Perry was still hot a little ways back as he soon overtook both Manhire and Beninocosa to hold a finn second. Silhanek took Perry's advice and followed through to also pass Manhire and Benincasa. Perry soon went down leaving Silhanek to take second, and Manhire passed Ben· inocosa for third. The second moto blasted off the line with Keese jumping into an early lead. Silhanek and Manhire hung in for second and third ahead of Perry who was again charging hard. Perry soon went down letting Benincosa move into fourth. Keese held his lead for most of the race, but Silhanek soon found a way around and grabbed it. Benincasa, running fourth, soon got by Manhire to take third behind Silhanek and Keese. Results 110 JR: 1. ChucI< M.... IKawI; 2. 0 - . McKenny (Hen); 3. Craig KdlIrv I~. 110 INT: 1. Jim WlItey; 2. The third race out on the track was 125cc Novice Division One with Yama· ha-mounted Kenny Thorenson taking the lead. But close behind came Mark Metcalf, Dex Hayhurst and Mike Beaber. Kenny felt the pressure from these guys, and by the end of lap one, had stretched his lead to 10 seconds. Lap two saw Dex Hayhurst move past Metcalf for second, but not for long as a loss in concentration by both Dex and Mark cost them their positions allowing Chris Hartes into second, moving Hayhurst to third and Jim McCracken to fourth. Moving up fast was Robert Chandler from fIfth to challenge McCracken for three laps before fInally gelling by. Hayhurst found himself down again, dropping three positions to sixth spot. This mistake allowed Chandler to take over third, McCracken fourth, and Beaber fifth. Despite a daring final tum pass allempt by Mike to try and move to fourth, that's how they finished. Thorenson led the pack through tum one in moto two, but a determined Hartes pulled off a pass on lap three that put him out front. Third place Chandler had the job of holding off hard·charging Beaber and John Harrah. Mike made his move on lap four and took over third from Chandler. At this time, the bailie for first was decided as Thorenson roosted past Hartes to regain the lead and quickly tum it into a IO-second cushion, making it a I-I sweep. Lap five saw Beaber slip up to fmd himself behind Hayhurst once again, but another daring pass at· tempt succeeded in moving him to fourth position. Moto one of the Open Experts saw Dan Dossey come out of the first turn with the lead followed by Jay Heying and Toni Berluti. Things were to change rapidly, though, as Berluti allowed Jeff Cloutier by for third. Jeff pressured Heying into pushing too hard into a turn causing him to highside and letting Cloutier into second place. By lap four, Cloutier had moved into a wheel·to-wheel battle with Dossey for the lead. In a do-or-die pass move, Cloutier acquired the lead and proceeded to put himself out front by five seconds, pulling away with each tum. Meanwhile, the battle for third became the race as Heying and KTMmounted AI McElroy traded places as many as two times a lap. McElroy came out the victor and quickly made short work of Dossey for second place. BerLuti took his Yamaha past Heying for fourth place and soon made Dossey aware he was right behind pressuring for that number three spot. Toni finally got the break he needed and took over third, moving Dossey down to fourth. Cloutier finished with a huge 20-second lead under flawless riding. In moto two, Cloutier got the break he needed to clinch a 1-1 sweep as he pulled the holeshot and rode what equalled his first moto perfonnance. Thus, the battle again was for second and third positions. A slight mistake caused McElroy to drop temporarily from second to fourth behind Brian Butler and Tim Dyer in third. McElroy quiclr.ly regained his confidence and passed Dyer for third. On lap five, McElroy took his KTM back into second ahead of Butler. Back in fifth after a bad start, Berluti mounted a charge that took him by both Butler and Dyer to take hold of third place. Results MINI NOV: 1. Greg BlevinalSuzl; 2. Gene Key lYoml; 3. OTHGtours Sprockets Park By Bang Bang Bobo Ingram BAKERSFIELD, CA, MAY 17 A well prepared track with a few revamped sections and no dust is what AME promoter Jerry Shore promised the Over The Hill Gang. It proved to be all of that and more. Each tum was banked with more than enough room to pass any· where on the track. A new club member, David Ragen (Hus), won it in the Expert dass with back· to-back wins. He beat the pack to the first tum and held that position to the checkers. Stubby Steve (Mai) and Roll Over Rick (Yam) brought up second and third, respectively. The second moto saw RoD Over Rick grab the holeshot with Stubby Steve in hot pursuit. They held the one·two position until the fifth lap when Rogers passed Stubby Steve in one of the rough - sections of the track and moved into second. Rogen wasn't about to let these two "outsiders" beat him on his home turf. By the end of the sixth lap, Rogers pushed his big Husky to the limit, flying by Roll Over Rick at the "Ant Hill" to take first place brass. Stubby Steve finished second with his 2·2 score. Roll Over Rick, who is com· ing off a recent injury, rang up a 5-5 tally for third place. The Amateur class left the starting gate on the heels of the Experts, having to share the track with them. Jester Jerry (Yam), a recent moved-down Expert, took the holeshot in both motos and, although challenged briefly by Kwik Keith, went on to win with I-I scores. Kwik Keith and Too Tall Tim had their own race going, each passing
