M.........th• • Call The fint moto saw Mike Kelly put his Orange County Cycle Yamaha into a quick lead with Suzuki-mounted Dave Eropkin in second. Roger Hayes was third for one lap until Reid slipped by. At the md of the fifth lap it was Kelly, Eropkin and Reid. On the sixth lap Reid passed Eropkin and thm .John McCaughey, who had been steadily moving up, also passed Eropkin and took third. Mota two seemed like an mtirely different class as fint time Pro Ian Fitzgibbon, riding for Rustan's, took the holeshot and never looked back. Reid started out in second and Kelly, who had a poor start, was stuck in the pack. Reid held on to second until just before the white flag when Advanced Cycle's Fred Combs made a move and took over second. Kelly had moved up to fourth but couldn't get by Reid in the race for the money. The fiDlil results gave the nod to Reid with a 2-!l score over Kelly's 1-4. Combs' 6-2 was enough for third overall. MAY 27 Clint Hardick and David Gerig matched up their Suzukis -and Huskys in the 250 and 500cc Pro classes, and the result was Hardick in a tie· breaker for the 5005 and a two for two 250cc win. Except the money didn't quite come out that wayl Seems that Hardick, while leading the second mota of the 2505. left the course over the top of a high-banked turn, and while still holding a slim lead over Gerig, returned to the course about !l5 feet downstream of where he went off. Speedway 117 officials had the protest ready to set back Hardick even though he re-established a dominating lead for the win, but Gerig and Hardick settled the matter in a very sportsmanlike and gentlemanly man· ner; they split first and second money and gave Hardiclt win points. Maybe the Indy guys should come out to Speed· way 117 for a lesson in how to solve ,protests! With one more race left in the Coke/ KPRI Spring Championship series left, several qf; t~"c~ .title,.~ stjlI JlP( fOT, grabs. Especially the 250cc:Junion and the MiniJunion. [n the 2505, Yamaha· mounted Clint Berger ripped off anothe.r two for two victory over a fast improving Fernando Van Willis as previous point leader Glenn Sorensen wound up dead last and Berger now moves to two points away from the Spring series championship. The same situation exists in the Mini Junion where four riders are now locked up in a virtual photo finish for the Spring championships. Yamahamounted Cory Falter ripped off another win - his fifth out of the last six - to move into a close fourth behind Eric Dickerhoff. Jeff McCoy and a fading Timmy Schoos. Only 14 points separate these three riders with one race remaining. Win, lose or draw, all four of these riders will be Intermediates for the Summer series. which promises to be a real barnburnerl In the Mini Intermediates. Kawasaki Motor Corp. hotshot Scott Brown made his first ever appearance at Speedway 117, and the 11-year-old put on a great performance with a two for two sweep of the Mini Intermediates plus a total rip-off of the Junior Cycle where he became the first 60cc rider to "do the KPRI double." Blake, Storer smokeNMA Ponca CIty qualifier By Tom Corley ORANGE, CA, MAY 24 Riders from aLL over the world came to race in the NMA/Yamaha World Mini Grand Prix in April. Now the National Motosports Association is creating more excitement with their Grand National Championship Series. The action started last week in Las Vegas and the second event fired off today at Saddle· back with over !l00 Pee Wee, minicycle and motorcycle contestants. The racing took place on the Saddleback Olympiad track that was modified at the first turn. The new start changed the outcome of several events as some riden found a section of it to be a little rough. One such occasion occurred in the fint mota of the 8!lcc Stock Expert 12 and over race. The riders made the right hand climb and then several bikes piled up. No harm was done to anyone except that a few riders had to do some catching up. Yamaha factory rider Troy Blake, along with Jahner Kight were left way back. Rick Hemme carried the lead away in front of Paul Denis, Sam Storer and Snell Johnson. A bad start can't keep a good man down, and Troy Blake proved that in the final mota as he led the entire race and took fint in front of Storer. Todd Campbell and Denis. On the overall trophy list it was Storer, Denis, Hemme, Blake and Campbell. When Blake graduates to the 125cc Pro ranks he is going to be a real threat. He proved himself to be the fastest in the other two Expert races. Blake won the first mota of the Modified race in front of Denis and Johnson. He had it wired down in the last mota but took a spill which gave Hemme the win. A 1-2 score still gave Troy Blake the win over Denis, Hemme, Bruce Bunch and Johnson. , In th~ ,105cc Expert race Blake placed save first in both matos which him the overall win in front of Kight, Hemme, Denis and Campbell. Scott Brown is with Team Green but because they do DOt have a 60cc machine he races a Yamaha in theJunior Cycle class. Brown won both of the Stock Intermediate 9·11 races over Kyle Lewis and Shane Trittler. In the Modified race, Brown was mounted on a Rustan Yamaha. He beat Mouse McCoy in the first mota but that turned around in the final. McCoy was testing a new bike for Yamaha that had better rear suspension and it also had an induction booster on the engine. Because McCoy won the last race he captured the overall trophy ahead of Brown, Lewis and Trittler. Wade Bone is going to be visiting some of the Australian racers very soon. Bone is another Rustan Yamaha competitor and he scored well in the 8!lcc Modified Novice 12 and over event. He took the holeshot in the fint mota and led it till Ron Ragen gained on him and got by for fint. Rogen took the fmal mota win also which made him the overall champ. On the official results the top five nden were Rogen, Bone, Tim SChOOl, Kurt Strand and Roger Ebling. The next NMA event will be at Arroyo Cycle Park on Sunday, June 14. Results e... e...
