Chwastyk fantastic at CMC AscotMX By Tom Corley GARDENA, CA, MAY 21 When the Continental Moto- sports Club hosts a special points race for the Pros, you can count on the finest talent to create a showdown. In the quick 125cc Pro class, John Chwastyk picked up top money against a field of 17 riders. Clint Hardick engaged his Suzuki in the 250cc Pro cIass warfare against the likes of Tim Lunde and Gary Jones and beat them both in the exciting final. Hardick tasted victory in that case but was defeat~ by hard-driving David Gerijt. who is now the reigning king of the 500cc Pro ranks. All of this was just part of the nighttime motocross action found atJ.C. Agajanian's Ascot Park. Every Thursday night the 125cc Pro battle is a real crowd pleaser and a different name takes the win each time. Mike Beier took the honors last week but he develord troubles right off. John Chwasty borrow~ a friend's Suzuki and the bike helped him take the win. In the ftrSt mota Craig Westergaard got the lead off the start and held off Chwastyk to the finish while Glenn Page was third_ Then Chwastyk got the holeshot in the final event I~ to the first wave of the checkered flag, defeating Angel Montoya and Rick Maki. On the payoff list the money was distributed to Chwastyk, Westergaard, Montoya, Page and Rick Maki. There were so many 250cc Pro contestants that it was necessary to have two divisions of races. T&O Yamaha racer Tim Lunde got the jump on the pack in the first race and he led but was being hard pressed by Clint Hardick, who worked his way up. Hardick almost tagged Lunde at the finish line but had to settle for second. A real scramble for the lead was seen in the second division. Ron Olsen, one of the newer 250cc Pros, was leading this race and having one of his finest performances. But the veteran riders start~ to work on by Ron, starting with Juan Benavidez and Russ Wageman_ Soon Clark Jones was in third ahead of Olsen. On a slippery corner Benavidez got sideways, Wageman was now forced to change his line, and when this happened Jones took advantage and gassed it by for the lead! After a consolation race the top riders met for the fmal. The gate dropped and the holeshot anists were battling for the lead. Hardick and Lunde were within inches but Hardick came out in first. He jetted away from the pack and now there was a four man battle for second place between Lunde, Jones, David Gerig and Benavidez. As it turned out Hardick was the winner and Lunde reigned in second with those same riders placing behind him. Hardick met a tough 500cc Pro class and he won the first mota ahead of visiting Danny Turner and Gerig. Gerig showed just why he is the new king in the dass during the final mota. Gerig held the lead and aced out Maico rider Scott Johnson and Hardick. On the payoff list it was Gerig, Hardick, Johnson, Dale Lewis and Clark Jones. • Results 80 JR: 1. Ronnie Oensford IYaml; 2.
