TEN YEARS AGO Th~ annual Laconia Classic road rac~ at Loudon, NH, was typical of AMA Grand National Championship com~tition. Aft~r 100 miles. th~ rac~ was d~id~ by six inches wh~n Mark BreWord snuck his XR750 Harl~ Davidson road rac~r und~r th~ 350 Yamaha of Kel Carruthen to win by half a 'foot at th~ lin~. Carruth~rs had I~d most of the race, with Brelsford up front only briefly ~for~ the ch~kered flag. Dick Mann (BSA) finish~ third to maintain his I~ad in th~ point standings. In th~ Junior rac~. Kenny Roberts (Yam) l~d till his motor blew, allowing Loyal P~nn to tak~ th~ victory. In the combined 250cc race run the day before th~ National, Carruthers I~ all th~ way. J.N. Roberts and Malcolm Smith teamed up on an eight-s~d Husky 400 to win top motorcycl~ honors in the NORRA Baja 500. They completed th~ 550-mil~ course in II hours and 59 minutes. Th~ ~ond fastest bik~ was none oth~r than a 125 DKW. ridden by Gene Cannady and Max Switzerl A motorcyclist. Bobby Ferro, was the ovoerall winner in the rare; unfortunately, he was driving a four-whttl dun~ buggy at the time. John DeSoto paid a visit to San Antonio, TX. and swept all three motos of th~ 250cc Ex~rt class. In each rare.~, the Flyin' Hawaiian had to get around determin~ Lon~ Star Stat~ star Jack O'Leary. Rick Woods was a doubl~ winn~r at Costa Mesa's weekly spttdway hap~n ing, taking both th~ Scratch and Handicap mains. Mike CurOlO won th~ Second Division main. and Gene Woods best~ Jeff Ward in a s~ial mini enduro race. AMA Pro IT action at the M1. S1. Helens M.C. track in Castle Rock, WA, saw Chuck Joyner taking the Ex~rt main event over Paul BOItrom and Terry Donch. Randy Scott won the Junior trophy dash and was leading the main, but had trouble and Tony P~rella went on to take the win. In a similar circumstanc~. SteVe Baker won the Novice trophy dash. but t~ngl~ with anoth~r rider whil~ I~ad ing the main and Eric Wam~r ~merged th~ winner. The AFM road race at Orange County International was billed as the Norton GP. and Norton rid~rs liv~ up to the billing. In O~n Production George Kerker, Jack Simmons and Bill Manley finish~ }·2·3 on Nortons, and Kerker cam~ back to win Open GP. Th~ Viewfinders and Lost motorcycl~ clubs combin~ to Angels put on a D-37 dual European Scrambles at Hi Vista.
