"Killer" Carroll Richrdson turned in another outstanding performance as he piloted his WRW Big "D" Yamaha to consecutive victories ahead of the talented field with Pete Sullivan (Yam) coming from behind for second in l25cc Stock action. In 125cc Novice news, Darin Williams (Yam) was the headliner as he stole the show with Morris "The Cat" Troxell (Kaw) ending the day in second ahead of Mark "The Underdog" Terry (Suz). John Kindhart (Yam) took the 250cc Stock class as John Ensign (Yam) domi· nated 250cc Novice action ahead of Arlington Yamaha's "Cruisin' Chris" Black. "Quick" Billy Click (Hon) found the fast lane as he dusted the field of Over 30 riders. In Open Novice action, David Hubbard (Hon) put together another flawless effon as Andy Gilkey (Mai) came f.rom behind for second ahead of early leader Roger Olson (Yam). Intermission offered the riders a chance to reflect on the exciting Riverside course that was said to be similar to the tracks in California - hard and hilly. When the action got back underway, the 125cc Intermediates busted berms first as they moved into the hills of Riverside with the "Killer," Carroll Richardson, aboard another WRW Big "D" Yamaha, emerging victorious again, setting lap times faster than many of the front-running Pros. Second in the overall column with a 3-4 tally was "Movin' On" Mike Brown (Suz) who full-floated his way around Riverside. When the 125cc Pros made their appearance at the staning gate, many speculators had a hard time choosing favorites. When the gate hit the ground, the action began as the group took it to the limit. As the moto progressed, "Flyin' Bryan" Taylor (Suz) proved to those with doubts that he was definitely the quickest with Kyle Landrum (Suz) finishing second on his Howard Racing Full·Floater. Third as the checkers came out was "Consistent" Mike Clements (Suz), whose holeshot string was stretched to four with a pair at Riverside. Round two saw Landrum and Clements duel for the overall as Taylor did a turf test. Meanwhile, "Too Tough" Tim Butler (Yam) moved into the spotlight after a crash in round one, as he and teammate Greg "Go For It" Fouts (Yam) played cat and mouse throughout the eight·lap event. As round two ended, Landrum received the nod as Clements finished a consistent second ahead of Butler, Todd Young (Suz), Chris Loftin (Suz) and Taylor. Overall it was Landrum, Clements, Butler, Taylor, Young, Ronald Dawson (Suz) and Fouts, who performed a special turf test at Riverside. The 250cc Pros received another riding lesson as "Flyin' Bryan" styled his way around comer after comer with some very impressive lines. 'Rounds one and two began and ended in much the same way, with Taylor on the gas and out front. The biggest difference between the start and the finish was tbe margin by which Taylor led. Second after two action-filled rounds of racing was VP Racing's Keith Simmons (Yam) with a 5-3 effon who edged out Joey Balcom's (Hus) 4-4 and Glen Goddier's (Hon) 8·2. Kevin Honon (Hus) left little doubt about his intentions as he took both Open Pro motos. Tom Curry (Hon) Pro·Linked his way to second with "Gassin' Glen" Goodier (Hon) taking his D &: S Cycles red rocket to third in each round. All in all, the Ta·AMA spring lCries was IUper. CA 91364 (213) 345-7616 Maley takes two at Arroyo MX - Sale PositIvely Ends June 30th, J98J (213) 348-7865 Ask for BILL McLEAN Ask for HUGH MILLER By Linda Matz HARLINGEN, TX, MAY 17 With the temperature peaking at 96° and constantly changing terrain, racers and fans enjoyed a "hot" day of racing at Arroyo MX Park. One section of the track be· came unraceable and for safety's sake, race officials bypassed this section for the second moto. Mike Maley, aboard a Honda XR200, was the winner of the day with his sweep of two classes. It was no easy task, but Maley took home first-place honors in the Over 30 Enduro and 250cc Novice classes. Hector Bautista held off Maley for fITst place in the Over 30 Enduro class first round and led for half of the second when he went down, allowing Maley to take over first. Bautista came across in sixth for second place for the day. The 250-0pen Novice class is usually dominated by Billy Bruton and his Honda. As usual Bruton took the holeshot in the first moto, followed closely by Bautista, Frank Matz and Maley. Once again, Bautista went down, allowing Bruton to cruise to an easy win. Matz was able to hold off Maley until the final tum where, with the checkered flag in sight, Maley cut in low and edged Matz out at the line. In moto two, Bruton again took the lead, but Bautista would not give up and took first on the second lap. This time, Bautista ran a near flawless race to hold on. Maley was again f'Shting to take second, from Bruton this time. Persistence paid off as Bruton went down on the final lap giving Maley a 22 for first overall. The Senior Mini class produced the day's most exciting finish. Mark Myatt was able to squeeze past T.R. Brons at the finish line to take first for the day. Had Brons held on, he would have had the number one honor. • OVER SERVICE WHILE YOU WAIT: 1000 -Cuatom Wheel Building STREE & DIRT TI RES IN STOCK SO.
