Brunson and Davisl Polen top Hailwood Memorial RR By Mike Reilly COLLEGE STATION, TX, APR. 25·26 The Central Road Racing Club of Texas invaded the famed Texas World Speedway for a two-day extravaganza in honor of the late Mike Hailwood. Beginning with a four· hour endurance race on Saturday and climaxing with the 30 mile sprints on Sunday, over 20 in all, the weekend very much followed in the tradition of "Mike the Bike." Both days were record setten as a dramatic contest between two teams smashed the distance mark in the Four Hour, and a t~mendous turnout both for riden and spectators on Sunday proved to be the greatest in the seven year history of the club, The TWS road course u.ses a mile of the banking that forms the nonhem half of the "world's fastest speedway." Much of the superspeedway was repaved prior to the event in preparation for several automobile events later in the year. Unfortunately, there seems to be a difference of opinion over the definition of "repaving." Turn one, which joins the banking with the infield, was so gravel strewn that it offered traction on par with an icy slalom course, and the north banlting was so rough that the mega-horsepower machines had to tiptoe through the ripples until reaching the front straightaway. Nevertheless, most endured and adapted, and the race action was only slightly diminished by the handicap. The Four-Hour Endurance race was the closest fought contest in the six year history of CRRC enduros. The fint and second place machines were separated by a mere 52 seconds at the finish. A Yamaha 750 Seca masterfully piloted by Vernon Davis and Doug Polen upset a GSIIOO Suzuki ridden by Paul Stephenson, Jon Minnono and Ronnie Lundsford. It was not only a stunning victory for the Kasson Yamaha team, but it was a
