Gerl, continues
points lead at CMC
Saddlebaclf
By Mike Klinger
ORANGE, CA, MAY 5
Husqvarna-mounted, Mitch Payton-sponsored Dave Gerig continued to pull away from the rest of
the field in his points surge for
28
the number one plate in the Open cll..
in the Continental Moto-sports Club.
Gerig finished a strong second behind
his teammate Jeff Jennings (Hus) but
with Scott Johnson milaing the point
event at Saddleback due to an Ascot
accident, Gerig just mounted up the
points on second placeJohDlOn. In the
250cc Pro class Juan Benavidez (C-A)
swapped positions with Jim Tarantino
(Hon) to best a field of 24 Professional
riden. A fim and a second was good
enough for the overall for Mike Beier
(Yam) in the 125cc Pros with Gary
Denton (Suz) and Rick Maki (Yam)
making Beier's task tough.
In the 125cc Pro clau, DG·
SPODIOred Maki took the holeshot with
Denton, Beier and Scott Manning
(Yam) closing. The excitement happen·
ed early in the moto when on lap three
Beier ovenook Maki and Denton in
one swoop, took the lead and could
not be touched. Maki then held on to
second with Denton breathing down
his neck for 14 lapll. Manning was
founh.
Moto two had a slight change with
Beier finishing in second position with
the moto win going to Gary Denton.
Denton controlled the entire mota but
his third place finish in !DOlO one
would ca_ him to be bumped from
the overall unJaa Maid couJcf CIftrtUe
Beier. Denton won handily but Beier
won top monies. Maki was third and
third overall. Manning was fourth
and founh overall.
The 250cc Pro class was the largest
of the day. Twenty·four ridcn ~
up the chute and Jim Tarantino (Hon)
pulled the lead and was never touched
the entire moto. Chasing Tarantino
were Craig Gormley (Yam) and Juan
Benavidez (C· A). In founh place Ted
Hoyt (Yam) and Steve Banning (Yam)
had a good race to see who could catch
the leaden, By lap three Benavidez
ovenook Gormley for second and
made a challenge for the lead but Tarantino was too fast. At lap 10, Banning
fmally got by Hoyt for third after
Gormley withdrew with mechanical
problems. Tarantino ran away with
the win with Benavidez a solid second.
Banning picked up third with Hoyt
fourth over Tun Lunde (Yam) and Andy
Jefferson (Suz).
Moto two had quite a change. Tarantino could not keep the lead, Benavi·
dez won in good style and Jefferson
made a 6-2 score grab third overall.
Obviously with Benavidez's 2- I score
he won the overall and Tarantino (1- 5)
was second. Jefferson came from the
middle of the pack and put together a
fantastic ride, the best we have seen in
a long while. Ted Hoyt tallied two
founhs for founh overall.
Mark
Howell (Yam) was fifth.
In the Open class it was a two rider
duel and show as Jennings and Gerig
put on quite a lesson on motocross. In
moto one Matt Tedder (Yam) took the
lead but by lap two he turned the lead
over to the faster riden. Gerig had the
lead as long as Jennings was in traffic
but as soon as Jennings opened the
door he crept up on Gerig lap after
lap. On lap six Jennings took the lead
with Tony Wankel (Yam) and Bill
Keefe (Hus) pushing Gerig for second.
On the last lap, the Ron Callaway·
tuned machine of Wanket soared past
Keefe on the triple jumpll and took
over third position. Jennings won
easily with Gerig, Wanket and Keefe
making up the top four.
Jennings posted another win in moto
two and won the overall handily. Gerig
took second again with a repeat
performance by Wanket and Keefe for
third and fourth overall.

Bunch, Evans star
at CMMC Barona
MX
By Rod Eschenburg
SAN DIEGO, CA, MAY 5
Suzuki rider Bruce Bunch put
together two 3-1 efforts to take
the IOScc Mini, and the 80cc
Stock Expert Mini classes at Barana Oaks in two very wild classes,
In the I05cc Minis, Bunch took a
tie· breaker over defending champ
Sam Storer (Kaw) as Intermediate ~d·
er Mike Healey (Suz) held off Storer in
the second moto for second and third
overall. Healey didn't fare so well in
his own classes as a fust lap crash in
the second moto of the Stock Mini Intermediates wiped him out for the rest
of the day. Defending Exprrt Mini
champ Storer came back in the Modi·
fied Minis for a great come·from-behind
second moto tie·breaker win over
Yamaha·mounted Paul Dennis who,
in tum, had a close one over new
Expert rider Richie Dobbs (Yam) who
ran very strong in his fint Expen out·
ing,
Really great competition in the 125cc
Intermediates saw Honda-mounted
Billy Evans coming up with two scram·
bling overall wins. In the Stocks, Evans
took a 1-2 finish to win over Mitch
Palmer (Suz) who had a 5·1 go to edge
Bill Koenig's 2-5 effon. In the Modi·
fieds, it was Evans once again edging
Palmer - this time 2·1 to 5-2 - with
fin! moto winner Bobby Vrhel dropping to third after trouble and a sixth
place finish in the second round.
Another tie-breaker was recorded in
the huge Stock 125cc Novice class
where Mike Shepardson scored his fint
ever Barona victory over Mark ScOIl
with a 5·1 effon over Scott's 2·2 finishes.
It was wild all the way back as Kevin
"Wildman" Nolan got third off a 1-7
effon over SCOIl Shirley's 6- 51
Returning to the Minis, Yamaha
mounted Cory Falter extended his win
streak to seven straight as he repeated
his two for two wins from two weeks
ago; this time in four straight molO
...ins in the Stock and Modified Novice
classes.
Largely through the efforts of
Dennis Dahlin, Sr., the Pee Wen are
really flourishing at Barona with 9-12
rider classes. The big Stock class Sunday saw Sean Thornton (Suz) squeak
out a tie· breaker second moto win over
Dennis Dahlin, Jr. (hj) with second
generation racer Gregg Phillipson in
for a close third. In the Modifieds, it
was Pat Healey (Suz) in a come from
behind second moto win as Sean
Thornton had a tie-breaker second
over Dahlin with a 5-2 to Dahlin's 1·4,.
