Salmnan had. at times, a 17 second lead over McGraw. This COlIne \lied the motocroa eection, then wound out into the daen. through sand washes and giant wboop-de-dooa. It then came back to the lIIlall IDCltOCJWa lleCtion then back into the de8en where it was wide open all the way for fift or six miles. Many COmeR were easily cut and many riden were disqualified. Jim Berry was third Open Expen fonowed by Charlie Conway and fint 250cc Gary Little. Dennis ROIeDberg was fint Amateur. Vern Heth and Hoyt Statham gave each other good competition for second 250cc after each checked out the Adelanto soil. The mini race was the second race and Bellflower Yamaba rider Keith Senn and Dale's Modern Cycle's Shannon Shamblin were aide by side through the MX section. Senn had a good lead at the end of the first lap but suffered a hard get off just before the finish of the second lap. This left Shamblin out front and all alone. Eric Anderson staned on the second line and finished just seconds behind Shamblin. Timewise, it was estimated that Anderson took fastest time between Shamblin and Andenon. The 250cc race featured Larry Thompeon, Craig Adams, and Honda factory rider Dave Aldana. who was taking a break in his busy European schedule to relax and have fun with his friends from the Dallas Baker shop. Competition was excellent in this race and top fInish chose pannen. Steve Blakely took fourth behind the afore· mentioned, followed by the ferocious battling of Steve Huth and Chuck Montilipre and Ray Catis and Bryan Statham. Thompeon and Adams stayed almost side by side for this entire hour where Adams took the edge in the last lap. Adams seemingly had the overall wrapped up when his Can·Am ran out of gas a quaner mile from the fInish. Adams reacted quickly, pushing his bike to the nearest camper and receiving enough gas to still fInish second behind Thompeon. Aldana who rides a 1000cc Honda in European endurance races for a living, doesn't race motocroes or grand prix as a rule. He said he came out just for fun but admitted the speeds on the course seemed faster than 160 miles per hour he's \lied to on asphalt. Daft Aldana is probably most remembered as one of the highlighu in a movie called 'On Any Sunday'. The 200cc race featured Kurt pfeiffer and Bobby Maxwell. who give each other competition where ever tbeyrace. For the fint three laps, pfeiffer had the edge with Maxwell hot on his tail. Maxwell's bike didn't appear to be running iu best and pfeiffer moved out a10ne and rode the last three laps the undisputed leader. Mark Heth riding a water-cooled Yamaha, went down but still took an impressive third followed by Roben Miller. Oren Beck:Jr. (Yam) staned on the Amateur line and finished first amateur, fifth overall. The last race, the Open race, again featured Bill Saltzman and Craig Adams. Again, Saltzman likes to win and win he did. Adams battled and aced motoenlller Randy Blevins for second place followed by Mark Asbury, Paul Huffman, Chuck Montilipre. and "Wild Bill" Holmes. Don Boese took flnt Amateur. The infamous 1666, Mike Sixber)' took. hard get-off but is reponed to be OK. Also SRA thaw Alben St. George who gave up rwo places to report • downed rider in the 200cc race. Official resulu pending. OIS011 ov.r.... Old nm.rs ItX By Bob Alloy VALENCIA, CA, MAY 5 There were clear skies. warm weather. a great track prepared by the California Racing Club, and 52 of the finest Old Timers around anywhere, all tDFther for a terrific day of motocroes racing at Indian dunes. Masters Marvin Olson and Bob Millner got things underway with lou of action. Bob took the lead in moto one and carried it for rwo laps. Olson then blasted his way into the lead with Bob right on his tail. Bob didn't give up until he went down right at the white Oag. So Marvin was fint place winner. Blackie Lewis was back with us again, and he did all right for himself with his second place win. Ray Sanchez got his four-stroke Yamaha into third place. The second moto began with Tom Widick in the lead until lap five; then Tom had stalling problems. Olson took over the lead and won the moto. Millner was right there and followed Marvin in for second place. Dan San· chez took the third spot. Expert Dave Hutchens took the hoIeshot and led the action for five laps. Gerry HutchiDllOn then made his move and carried his lead to the fInish for fInt place. Hutchens came in second. Lou Sorensen claimed third, and Paul Clark got founh. Moto two began with Paul Clark grabbing the holeshot and leading the action. Hutchens took the lead on lap two and carried it right up to the finish. George Spearing showed us some excellent riding and got that second place win. Hutchinson was in there again, this time with a third place win. It was Sorenson in founh. Larry Smith led the Amateun for four laps. Then Hal Grady zeroed in and took the first place win four laps later. Larry then was in for second. George O'Haver captured third. followed by Dave Collins. Smith began the action in moto rwo and kept in the lead until Don Hobson took charge. Mter another rwo laps, Ed Scheidler was in the lead and he took his lead to the win. Hobson was in with second. Smith took third, and Bob Klatt put his new Maico in there to wrap up founh. Novice Ray Montoya took the lead in moto one which he held for fIve laps. Ray went down, giving Bob AIIoy the lead which he carried to the finish. Ken Willis took second. Third place winner was John Downey. and Larry Caldron took founh. The second moto winner was Chuck Bailey, who had it right from the start. John Downey placed second. John Turdo was in there with a good show which gave him third place. Following John, it was Alloy in founh. _. Results 1. _ MASTERS: DIoon; :z. DIn Sonchez; 3. Rey EXPERTS: 1. By M.,reen Lee Photo by Den Mehony GARDENA, CA. MAY 8 The last regular Friday night of the too short season turned into a demonstration by Grand National Champion Randy Goa of what the art of flat tracking is all about. The track was just great. shown right off the bat by the times set by the four who would go to the Expert Trophy Dash: Steve Eklund (22.02), Scott Parker (22.20). Randy Gosa (22.20) and Scott Pearson (22.59). Even the fastest Junior, Steve Kamen, had a 22.87. The fint Expert heat was the fastest. very clolIe to the flW lap record and won by Steve Morehead. Scott Pearson got his usual phenomenal stan and was dowo in rum one fint but right behind was Morehead who was into the lead before you could say HarleyDavidson. Then came Pearson, Steve Eklund and Ted Boody. Pearson made one wide trip up to the hay bales as the laps went down but didn't 10ile his third spot to Boody. By this time Eklund was busy chasing Morehead, but Steve was not to be caught. The second heat saw the appearance of Mike Kidd on the new Yamaha we've all been waiting for. Kidd was obviously experiencing handling problems - you could see the rear end hopping around in the south tum - but you don't go racing with a brand new motorcycle and have it perfonn perfectly first time out. Kidd came off the line with them all, Ronnie Jones missed a shift at a critical time and soon it was SCOtt Parker in the lead followed by Steve Lawson, and Brad Hurst. Hurst moved into second, and the fight was on for third between Bob Sanders, Ronnie Jones and Lawson. At one point, Lawson and Jones bounced off each other going down the front straight. Parker still stayed out from, and sadly, right on the white flag lap, Hunt's bike blew, so it finished Parker. Jones and Sanden.
