Inland Empire Serlesopens Arroyo Cycle Park New 1979 YZ250F $1095.00 • .... Iic.doc&_ w. Ship Out Of 5 _ .... w. Bar•••k B.Yd. Barn.1t, CA ••, . . U~'08'738 20 By Terry Rezek SAN BERNARDINO, CA. MAY 10 Arroyo Cycle Park opened its gates this Mother's Day for the first race to be held here in years. The Inland Racing Association. formed with the spDlUOrship of Inland Empire motorcycle dealers. was there to present the first in its Inland Empire MX leries. This three race leries. to be held entirely at Arroyo. has a total purse of $5000 cash to the, Pros and $5000 in contingencies to the sports· man winners. This day's top money went to Ron Lechien in the 125 class. Rodney Brand in the 250's and Don Griewe in the 500. In moto one of the 125cc Pros. Craig Palm was fastest off the line but Brent Blount cut him off at the first tum and came around leading lap one. Right behind him were Rod Brand and Ron Lechien. By lap three, Scott Manning had moved to second and was harrassing Blount but milled a rum and dropped a couple of positions. Lechien took advantage of the confusion to slip by Brand and set his sights on first. Lechien seemed a bit more confident in the turns and soon got by Blount to take first. That was how that moto ended. Lechien was taking no chances in the second moto and jumped to the lead immediately and stayed there, leaving the battling to second place. Manning and Brand took turns at second, with Brand bring the more determined. He repassed Manning about halfway through the race and fought off funher challenges to fmish second. The final standing for both motos was Lechien first and Brand second. The first qualifying heat of the 250cc Pros saw Mark Howell jump to an early lead with Scott Manning challenging. Howell resisted Manning's pressure for six laps but it was Manning who got the white flag for the last lap and hung on for the win. In the second heat, Rod Brand took advantage of the warm-up he had in the 125cc race and easily took the win. Brand stuffed his Desen Barstow Suzuki into an immediate lead in the final and kept it there in spite of near disaster. David Taylor and Clint Hardick were doing their best to get Brand and stayed within striking distance. Taylor almost got his chance at the end of lap two when Brand went down in a tricky right·hand drop tum. He was up immediately, but his 10second pad was gone and he was now only inches ahead. This only made him ride harder and he began methodically stretching out his lead again and took the win with a comfonable margin. In the meantime. Hardick had gotten by Taylor and fmished second. The heavyweight race had some heavyweight competitors. with "Rocket Rex" Staten going up against some very fast local talent. Staten was riding his practice bilr.e to save his race bilr.e for the 500cc National MX race in Massachusetts the following week and lost the stan line drag race to Don Griewe's Cycle World Maico. Griewe managed to maintain the lead through the entire ~ace with Staten never more than inches behind. Thus the stage was set for a tough battle in moto two. Staten knew he needed the win and his· entire attention focused on the gate at his wheel. He played a game of borderline destruction for his engine. keeping th revs dangerously high and the clutch set like a hair trigger. When the gate tripped. he left the line like the rocket he's named for and was 20 feet ahead at the first rum. For the next four laps. Staten rode cool and comervatiw. adding just a few seconds to his lead each lap. But it was not to be; the ground gremlins appeared and Staten's chain disappeared. never to be seen again. As the ~ Staten rolled down tbe ~ hill. Griewe took over and jubilantly cruised in for the overall win. 80 MOD PlIO: 1. $om 5 _ OC-~ 2. Rudy Dic:kineon (Suzl; 3.
