But going through tum three on the last lap, Ga. made a ~ on his Brent Thompsoa-tuned machine and then won barely - the drag race to the checkered flag. The final heat saw position changes aplenty as Hank Scott jumped into the point position ahead of Steve Eklund and Mike JUdd. Kidd. riding the Roberts/Lawwill Racing/PJI/Wrangler/Rocky Hark}'. took the lead two laps later as Gary Scott moved up to challenge for the lead. Soon the two Scotts and Kidd drew away from Ek· lund to set up their battle for the lead. After JUdd had led one lap. Hank Scott took over for the next four on his Silemore/Branch/Dickie/Team Jesusl RPM/KRWIBames Wheels Harley. all the time scarcely ahead of Kidd and Gary Scott. With three laps remaining. Kidd retook the le~d and with two laps remaining, Gary Scott took over second. Positions then held with Eklund and Rookie Rich Amaiz finishing 4-5. Semi. Brad Hurst got out in front of the first semi right away. used the high line. and led laps 1-10. First Wayne Rainey. then Alex Jorgensen tried to catch the flying Oregon rider. but to no avail. Hum took the sole transfer to the National. with Jorgensen and Rainey finishing 2-5. Rickey Campbell led the second semi briefly. but from then on it was Rich AmalZ and Steve Eklund. along with Danny Perkins. up front. Amaiz led mOlt of the middle lapS. with CaItrolI ArailStorme Wmter-spotIIOied point leader Eklund having to fight for bia life to get to the points-paying National_ Eklund got the 1ead on the eighth lap. but Amaiz stayed right with the former champ and led the ninth lap. On the last lap. Eklund finally fought his way into the National. Amaiz was second with Honda's Freddie Spencer third over Perkins. Trophy Rllce Amaiz was late to the line in the Trophy Race; his crew had to replace an exhaust dented in the Eklund battle. Scott Drake was fim into tum one. but Wayne Rainey was first out of tum two. At the end of a lap Amaiz was up to second ahead of Drake and Ronnie Jones. Amaiz edged ahead of Rainey on the third lap. but Rainey came right back. He led to the finish with Alex Jorgensen taking over second late in the race as Amaiz fought with an engine miss. Drake was fourth over Jeff McDaniel. Rainey's 4:52.95 broke the track record for 12 laps that he'd set the previous October. N8tional Starting from near the inside of the front row. Gary Scott was fim off the line as Ricky Graham and Garth Brow followed him into tum one. At the end of a lap, Brow was second behind Scott and ahead of Graham, with Scott Pearson, Mike Kidd and Jay Springsteen comprising the rest of the top six. Scott and Brow continued running 1-2 as Kidd and Springsteen moved up to third and founh by lap four. On the same lap Gou was up to sixth, trailing Pearson. On the founh lap Hum crashed into the tum one haybales. Reports were that a spread crank caused the engine to tie up. spitting him off. Another lap and Springer and Kidd were by as Scott's choice of tire f'roved to be good only fOT the opemng laps. With Brow leading. a heated battle was going on between Springsteen. Kidd and Goss over second. By the 15th lap, the battle was between the two factory Harley riders. On the 16th lap. Goss passed Springer for second and set up Brow. Two laps later Goss got underneath Brow in tum four and took over the lead. With Goss in the lead, Springsteen closed on Brow and the battle for second went down to the wire. They crossed the finish line side by side. with Brow getting the nod by about the width of a tire. With the winner's circle set, Kidd was founh by a good margin over Scott. After a good confrontation Scott Parker took sixth in front of Steve Eklund. Hank Scott, Scott Pearson and Ricky Graham rounded out the top 10. Steve Monger was 11th, Jeff Haney l:tth. and Steve Morehead was credited with 15th after breaking a connecting rod. "I just kept riding as hard as I can and went for it. I was getting around the center of the comers pretty fast and I could see I was gaining ground, so it happened. 1 just kept going as hard as I could because I knew those guys wouldn't quit - not with Jay back there. This is only the second time I've beaten Jay straight up where he wasn't sick or had probletns, so I was pretty pumped about that." said Goes. "The high line worked," said Brow, "but it kept getting higher and higher and it got so jtUys could go down low and gain on me. 1 didn't want to be the one experimenting, seeing as how I was in the lead." "It was close. It was a helluva good race. The race track - it just kept getting fanher and fanher out and then Kidd staned going on the bottom and making ground on us, so I staned trying it down there. And then Randy came by and he was going real fast on the bottom." said Springsteen. "There was a lot of racing going on, a lot of places being swapped back and forth in second. third, fourth and ftfth. For awhile I thought I was going to win it. I was getting ready to do some racing and make a game plan. stan running down low. And about the time I moved down everybody moved down. I had a problem with my handlebars hitting my leg - they called them mile ban and we should've taken them off but 1 went pretty good in time trials and the heat.
