Desert Hotline Livingston leads D·38 Notorious DawgsHS ..... ..... 00 By loretta Pipkin (j) CALEXICO, CA, APR. 26 Stylin' Leon Livingston (LifeTime Cosntruetion Yam) cruised in with a three minute lead over Darryl Cartwright (Montclair Yam) in the Fudpucker RacingTeam's Notorious Dawgs D-SS Hare Scrambles. Four 20-mile loops made up the course . in the Yuba Basin of Imperial Valley. Craig Corda (Suz) and Don Mathews (Yam) took the early lead as the race started in two waves just minutes apart. Before check two Livingston caught and passed Mathews. Then Corda missed a tum, giving Liv· ingston a perfect chance to slide by on the inside. He did just that, thanking Corda with a cloud of dust. Corda only made it a few miles further before his machine gave up as has been his fate all season. Jeff Foland moved past Mathews for second spot while Darryl Cartwright was fourth. Paul Eddy stayed in fifth after getting off behind Cartwright and taking a ground sample with his upper lip. Eddy recovered; the only harm done was knocking the knuckle off his trigger finger. Into the third loop Livingston continued his smooth lead in not so cool weather. A slight breeze helped a little but some riders were beginning to look as if the Notorious Dawg was dragging them the last 20 miles. Terry Belcher picked up the 250cc Amateur win after moving into the Amateur ranka just two races ago. "I had a pretty clean race," said Belcher. "I laid it over in the mudhills and I thought I was behind Jack FuDer. I don't know where I passed him but they told me I was ahead and I went for it." Novice 125cc riders Andy Foster an4. Scott Reams were having their own race. Foster fell on Parnes Perch, blocking the line. After a couple more riders piled up on him he got out and Reams passed him in the sandwash. That woke Foster up and he got Reams back. Reams captured second in class with a smile and some racked up suspension. Papa Floyd Mattox brought sons Tom and Bill down to test some shocks and try their luck at the Yuha desert. That didn't work out too well as neither finished but as Floyd put it, "0.37 didn't have a race this weekend and who wanted to paint the living room?" At the finish of the fourth loop Livingston finished sitting on the seat. He had worn blisters on his feet. "That's the end of those boots," he grinned. Cartwright pulled a second, Eddy moved up to third and Vet points leader from 0·37 Monte Lee took the Vets class and fourth overall. Don't forget water, shade and 0-38 Benefit Race May 10 at Plaster City West. Enduro and desert points will be offered in the one day trial event.
