Gallo who hustled on Day Two to finish rwmer-up at 2152.9. In the small-bore Intent classes, the winners .howed their stuff from the stan and never let up. Jack Penton bested fellow Kawasaki rider Vic Ely 2164.7 to 2171.95. Husqvarna's Dick BurlellOn and KTM'. Rod Bush .tayed with each other most of the way with BurlellOD getting the win, 2168.95 to 2192.5. Put on by the Mt. Baker M.C., the ~t was a near model of organization, helped, no doubt, by almost perfect weather. The trails varied from tight to open road and several creek croaings made things challenging for all. DeyOne Beginning at 8:01 a.m., two riden per minute headed out from the Haning area at Hannegan Speedway, located in an isolated area just nonheast of Bellingham. Open bikes staned first, followed by 175s, 250. andJinally the 125.. In all, a total of 81 bikes staned, a number quite a bit down from last year. After an easy lap on the motocross course, it was time to hit the pavement for a while before getting into a section of tight trail leading to Check One. Most riders weren't expecting it to be as tight as it was. KTM'. Rod Bush said, "Gettin' here was no easy chore." Track 'N Travel Maico rider Bob Rutten exclaimed, "You could hardly walk through therel" "That was just the start," said Husqvarna'. Scot Harden, "they haven't got to the fun stuff yet." Following the check, riders encountered the first special test, a grass track. Situated on the side of a gently sloping, open hill area, club members laid a serpentine course with string, ribbon and stakes through virgin, knee-deep grass. It proved to be a tricky course, however picturesque, and the clORSt thing to a European special test that most riders had encountered in this country. The fast time of 175 seconds (poinu) was shared by Frank Gallo on his Open . KTM and Frank Stacy on his 250 Suzuki. Jack Penton charged aggrasivelyon his Team True Spon Kawasaki when his minute came up. Despite clipping a stake, his 185 seconds was easily the fastest 175cc time. Penton'. teammate Vic Ely and Suzuki's Mike Rosso shared the second fastest 175cc time at 190 seconds. Dick BurlellOn turned in the fastest 125cc time with a 184 on his Husky. Rod Bush was second quickest around the tipt circuit with a 191. RieIers disappeared into the woods again after the grass track. The course from there was roughly the shape of a fJgUn eight with the eastern-most loop run twice (total mileage each day came to 161). A good mixture of pavement, logging road and tight trails com~ the course. The "fun stuff" that Scot Harden alluded to earlier wu probably some of the creek croaiDp. Most Intent riders didn't find the trails too difficult or muddy, but the water spelled disaster for some. Carl Cranke dropped his KTM in a creek but picked it up right away. "It _ r misled a beatl" he exclaimed with a wide grin. Suzuki'.Jdf Fredette came into check seven (the central gas area the riders hit three times as checIts four, seven and 10) and asked for a quaner-inch drill. He then proceeded to drill a hole in his Scott boou in back of the heel area, and as he did, water drained out! Fredette'. teammate Mike Rosso lost five minutes' when he fell in one 'cuIarly mh, deep CJWIiDg and emPE lUcked in some water_Jack .Job- fdI victim to the water on.m.
