up to challenge Scott within two laps.
A lap later Kidd was by and off to the
checkered flag. The battle for second
tightened up between Scott, Alex Jorgensen and Boody. In the end, Jerry

took the next two spots.
Junior Invitational
Northern California rider Bill Scott,
carrying number l2Z on his 350cc
water-cooled Yamaha two-stroke twin,
spent 12 laps in the lead of the 12-lap
Junior Invitational. Steve Karsten (H-D)
moved up to challenge Scott at the
midway point, but then Scott bobbled
badly, and in avoiding him, Karsten
lost several places. Mike Hale (H-D)
had been back in the pack, but after
Karsten had hit trouble, he passed
Chris Cannon (Yam) for second. Mike
Garrison (H-D) then got by for third
until three laps from the finish, when
Dorothy -Rowe (H-D) took both the
position and ·its advancement points
towards an Expert ranking.
Semis
Scott Peanon pulled a characteristic
holeshot on the fint semi, but Shoei/
Jad Sisemore-sponsored Terry Poovey
took the lead on the second lap and
pulled out to a commanding lead.
While the Texan disappeared, Peanon
was challenged heavily for second by
TIIil MertenI and Bubba Shobert. With .
two lape to go, Peanon got stud at the
wrong end of that three-way pad.
Shobert narrowly edged Mertens and

Four riders from the front row of the
second semi were sent to the penalty
line. allowing Ted Boody a clear shot
at the lead. But in the third turn,
Steve Monger and Bill Labrie went
down hard and the red flag came out.
Labrie was taken to the hospital and
reportedly x-rays showed a broken leg.
BOQ.Iiy again took the lead on the
restart, battling with Peter Gr.ant and
Rocky Robinson. Grant and Robinson
faded, allowing Rickey Campbell to
challenge Boody. He did just that,
leading briefly before Boody got back
in front to take the win for sponsor
Arai. Campbell, sponsored by Southeast H-D/Newman's, took the final
slot in the National as Joe Wilson
placed third ahead of Robinson.
. Trophy Race
Scott Pearson again showed great
starting ability as the l2-lap Bell
Helmets Trophy Race began. Soon
four riders - Pearson, Joe Wilson, Jim
Filice and Bill Crabbe - were closely
grouped up front. Pearson led for the
first four laps, then Wilson got by for a
couple. and Filice took good
advantage of the draft to lead for a
short while. But as it came down to the
last lap, Pearson had the lead with
Filice second. But on the final comer,
the Yamaha rider got into a hairy fulllock slide that nearly pitched him over
the ban. So at the line it was Ray
Beck/Arai/Castro)/Interpart/Circle
Bell-sponsored Pearson first, with
Wilson and Crabbe going past Filice
after his near get-off.
