I got a good stan, and I didn't see anyone around me. I just slipped the clutch and said 'All rightl" Keenan was challen~ in the early going by Danny COl' (Tony Murphy/ Can·Am 125) and Bill Mullins (Concord Yam TZ), but Mullins seized his motor and Coe's bille suddenly lost power. leaving Jill to contend only with Leggitt at the last tum. But Jeff didn't have enough horsepower, and Keenan became the first woman to win a major AFM class race against highly reputable competition. AFM Number One John Glover (Norm Snider Yam TZ250) had his work cut out for him in taking the 250cc GP class. Glover started back in the pack and had to work his way up to challenge the leaders. Glen Shopher (Farmhouse Rest./Shoei/ND/Yam TZ 250) and Mark Ingalls (Castrol/Cham· pion Spark Plug/Berkeley Yam TZ). "I slipped it (the clutch) 100 much. What a mess back there; I dido't realize what went on back there. My rear tire leaked from 28 to 14 Ibs. during the race." said John, who con· fessed to being extremely luck this year. Glover caught the [rontrunning pair after twO circuits and took the lead by passing both Shopher and Ingalls in the esses on the third lap. But John couldn't shake hjs rivals, who were content to wait for the leader to make a mBtake. It never occurred, and the fmish read Glover-lngalls-5hopher. Eddie Lawson (Kawasaki Motor Corp. (KZI025) showed up with his factory rides, but his main purpose in racing was to test his front forks prior to leav· ing for Europe. "We're working on the suspension today. What rougher, burnp· ier track is there?" Eddie leaves soon for Germany and Italy before return· ing to the U.S. to compete at Elkhart Lake (Wisconsin). Lawson entered the Open GP race and passed winner David Emde (San Jose BMW RI00) before pulling into the pits on the next·to·last lap. He also did more testing during the Superstreet contest, popping wheelies the whole way. Wrule Lawson was smonng along in the Open GP race, another celebrity was languisrung fanher back in the pack. It was Bruce Hammer, dialing in his Chevron USA Suzuki GS 1200. The appearance of Hammer and his Suzuki mark the beginning of the major oil company's involvement with motorcycle roadracing. Chevron is providing full sponsorsrup of racing rifon. wruch will be limited to endurance racing for now. Hamme.r will team with John Ulrich (Cyck WOTld Magazine editor) for six·hour races, with Dennis Smith of Cycle Tune doing the preparation. Smith will also ride in 24-hr. events. and Ron Pierce is tentatively slated to help out in !lO·hr. endurance races as well. "Bruce did it all; he made his pitch over a six-month period and got 'em," remarked Ulrich. "The bike works remarkably well. 1bis trung was a pile of parts last Tues· day," continued John. "It·s a Moriwaki Formula One chassis. Vance and Hines Racing did the engine, and Byron Hines penonally built the motor." Vance and Hines, well·known to drag racers, would like to prove to the motorcycling public that they can build rugh· powered , streetable. reliable engines. "1bis is their opportunity to do it," added Ul,rich. They plan to compete at Riverside. Nelson Ledges and possibly Rocnngham. In other action, Kirk Graves (Yam !l75) improved on last race's .second· place finish by winning the 450cc Production race. Howard Monise (Yam RD4OO) beat out Tom Maggard (Yam RD4OO) for runner-up. He also placed trurd in the 600cc Box Stock contest behind John Glover (Yam Seca 550) and Wrut Blakeslee (Kaw GPz550). Longtime AFMer Wayne Montoya (Yam RD!l50) again topped the 600cc Superstreet field. and Greg Overman rode rus trusty Can·Am to the 250cc Production win. Contingency prizes abounded today and will continue throughout the sea· son. Kawasaki will pay $150 to the winners of 600cc, 750cc and Open Box Stock and Production classes using their mach.ines.
