Th~ I~ad~n r~in~ in th~ sam~ ord~r as tlley h~ad~ hom~ for gas. C~ting th~ mountains and rid~ running down towards th~ pits, th~ ridfiS ~ surprised, and ohm confused, by t~ fact that ~ ~ I~ back onto th~ mountain, t~n through a tight and twitting gully next to th~ road, and finally on~ mo~ tim~ onto th~ low~r section of th~ mountain ~. fo~ th~ finally h~ad~ into th~ pits. It was sp«tating at its finest. Ontt out onto th~ second loop, with Bal~ntin~ (Open) settling into a st~ady pac~ fiv~ minutes ah~ad of Smith (Open), th~ Othfi top 10 ridfiS ~r~ permanmtly positi~ for ~ balantt of th~ next two laps. Fmc "C," pilo~ by Pet~ POIIt~I, had hem in tM 11 th slot the whole rac~. ~ ~ wasn't tM usual "fr~· way" found in Luttrne VaI~. Instead it was extrmlely challenging and ~ worthy of being a National Cham· pionship round. T~ only sad pan was that t~ w~ v~ry f~ ri~n from outsid~ D-57 to cbaIIen~ for th~ points, although thfi~ were num~rous motocrOllllen t~~. E ~ Butler bests CRC E Hobo 100 By Mike Klinger LUCERNE VALLEY, CA, APR. 5 Three weeks ago, the die· hard California Racing Club enduro riden were in a frantic panic. An entrants to the April event, the Hobo 100, rec~iv~ a lettfi from th~ presi~nt of CRC, Jfiry McN~al, stating thit du~ to th~ lack of manpow~r to h~lp with th~ enduros h~ would hav~ to t~nninat~ all of th~ enduros from this day forward. A m~ting was h~ld April IS and t~ ~nti~ problem has ~n solv~. Som~ avid ~nduro ridfiS a~ going to k~p the w~k~nds alive and UEA's Larry Langl~ will ~ the man in cha~. As ~~ryone pull~ up to th~ starting Iin~ for th~ir minut~, signs w~r~ pos~ ~erywhfi~ ~quest ing ~~ryon~ to m~t aft~r th~ enduro to disCUIS th~ futu~. Kun Butler won th~ oVfiall at tM Hobo 100, but ~v~ry on~ cam~ out a winn~r. Th~ th~ loop ~ent took platt at th~ ~ver popular AndfiSOn Dry LaIt~. At 8 a.m. the fint rid~n jett~ south through t~ tight and twitty ravin~ just out of camp. Looking acl'Olll th~ d~n you could ~ that the traill~ ~t1y to Soggy Dry LaIt~. Soav Dry LaIt~ was not bad but tM tliiCit, choking dust on the perimet~r of tM 1aIt~ was a ~a1 c~~. After about 50 miles tM loop ~nd~ and again Larry Stdan won th~ overaIJ for one IooPfiS. Stdan won t~ SOcc A c1aa and 1000t only one second; a very impresi~ rid~. Following Stdan for tM top honon ~ T~nt Witsaman (125cc C·I6) who lost sev~n seconds with third going to a woman ridfi in th~ 125cc B cIaas, Sh~lIy McDonald. Founh position w~nt to Gin~r Smith (I25cc W /B) and Jim Devin~ (200cc C·I6) tied and J~ff David (8Occ C) mad~ up th~ top fiv~. "_ Loops two and thr~ w~r~ a r~al chor~. Both courses invol~ som~ n~w t~rrain and dynamit~ hills. On loop two a bottl~n~k d~veloped halfway up a st~p, rocky hill. No on~ could man· ~uv~r around th~ down~ rid~rs and th~ st~p gully was too rocky for most of th~ contestants. So ~v~ryon~ ~ith~r , took th~ir chances with th~ bould~n or sat and wait~ as the valuabl~ seconds ticlt~ off. Joe Smith turn~ in th~ day's best 5Cor~ for two loopen with a thr~-second loss and th~ ov~rall in th~ Open C ov~r SO class. Lucky Fr~man, J~ff Faulf and Ray Wilbur follow~d Smith in th~ Open C class but a f~w seconds separat~ th~ field. Th~ rid~ of th~ day w~nt to Kurt Butl~r. Butl~r best~ th~ field of 525 rid~n and tack1~ th~ 81·mil~ course, losing only 25 seconds. With BUtl~r's ov~rall performanc~ h~ also topped th~ 200cc A class just ah~ad of second ovt;rall linish~r Craig Lair (250cc A). Lan and Grant Pal~nsk~ ti~ for second ov~rall, both losing 1.70 minutes. Mik~ Frick~ (200cc B) and Dan Klin~ (250cc A + 50) finish~ third and fourth, separated by only ~ seconds.
