1- C.ta Mesa - San Bernardlno- ~~~~~~~'E ~ the kids who had all the fun as Lance King won the scratch main and Gary Ford took the handicap main. Dave DeTemple recorded a pair of seconds giving him a spot in 12 of the possible 14 main events this year. After King leaves in August for the British Speedway League, there can be little doubt that DeTemple will be the next MIA to leave California. Coverboy Mike Muntean couldn't make it, but everybody else did. For the second consecutive week. plenty of riders (54) showed up - more than enough to fill the program. No word yet invented can describe the boredom of a four-rider handicap heat... hopefully those days are over in our town. In handicap racing, Ventura County's lone D-I rider, Bobby "Insane" McLain of Fillmore. enjoyed his best night of the year as he won his first two rides off the 30-year line. Ford recorded a second and a first in his rides off the 20 and DeTemple and King each came in second twice. The handicap main was a tight race, particularly after the first lap when all six riders were in striking distance of a win and a kiss from the trophy girl. First Tom Hughes had the lead when Ford passed him; then McLain passed them both. Next, Ford took it back as DeTemple passed everybody but Ford who managed to . block on the final tum to win a squeaker. King was third and McLain finished fourth. Ford, who has been consistently impressive all year, will probably try life off the 3D-yard line for: awhile. In scratch racing. McLain and DeTemple each won races by about 17 miles. Jeff Tomlin battled King wheel to wheel for: two laps until he went down. leaving young Lance_with an easy one. -In the final heat, two-time National Champion and six-time State Champ Steve Bast was passed on the third lap by Craig Schaeffer. thus losing a transfer spot. Bast was here for the first speedway race ever on June 16, 1971 and finished second in the scratch main. McLain and long Shawn McConnell were the other heat winners. King and DeTemple routed their competition in the semis to set up the showdown. The main event, as it is intended to be, turned out to be the race of the night. McLain slammed into the Snake (Larsen) in the first tum and lost his chain and the race. Meanwhile. King and DeTemple were long gone. It was wheel to wheel down the straights with DeTemple on the inside, gaining a temporary advantage in the turns. On the last lap, King passed DeTemple on the back straightaway; DeTemple took it back on the third tum, but King made a slick final comer and passed DeTemple within the final 20 feet to win by a spoke. That's two out of three for King up here so far. In Second Division action. Matt Jackson from Red Bluff enjoyed life off the 10 as he took the main by a few lengths, spoiling the debut of "Fast Eddie" Thurman in second. 1n D-3 action, that guy from Buena Park - Bob Pfeuing - won another main. his first up here, looking great off the lOin the process.
