name for himself. How did you get involved in motorcycla, as oppoeed to baseball or basketball or ... ? My dad used to ride and I just staned trail riding. We moved to Lubbock. Texas and a guy that worked for my dad had a son who raced so we kind of got into mini bike racing and now we're here. You've been strictly a din tracker all the time. Right. Any ambitions for being a road racer? Yeah, I'd like to hop on a road racer a couple of times. I think it's be fun. I've got a few friends that road race ,Mike Kidd and others. I think I'd like to I « what it's like. Any hobbia outside of racing? No. that's about it. Trail riding, I go riding quite a bit. Anything else? Chasing girls, that's about it. How about school? I'm still going to school. I'm a senior this year and I go to L. D. Bell in Euless. Texas. I talked to my school teachers and I told them about my racing career. I said I'm going to be missing a lot of school and if you'll work with me I'll try my hardest. I talked to all my teachers and all the people at the school, and the school board and they're all going to work with me. School shouldn't slow me down any. Isn't it pretty hard to race and go to school at the same time? Yes. Most racers just quit school or have a real hard time. My school wiJI work with me. It·s one of the few I've heard of that'll do it. I'm real happy. I like my school. Did Honda want you to stay in school? Yes. Both Jerry Griffith and Dennis McKay at Honda asked me if I was still in school. They said they didn't wam me quitting school to go racing. I was told it would be hard. but they wanted me to get my education. How did you go about getting MUs Winston to come out and be with you in the winner's circle in Houston? I was talking to her (Lynn Griffis) in the pits before the race and asked her if I got in the winner's circle would she be there. She said no because they would have the Budweiser Girls pre· sentlng the trophy. I told her I'd really like her to be there and she finally said she would come if I called her. I won, 1 called her and she came. It was pretty neal. Did it make you fed good to win your fint event as a Junior in front of basically hometown fans? You bet. 1 love to win in Texas and I've been looking forward to racing in and winning at the Astrodome for many years. It felt really good to win. You cao't start the season off better than that. Is Mike Kidd still helping you out? Yes. Mike's still helping me with a few things. We train together and Mike has been giving me some poimers on a lot of things. He's keeping me on the right track. Have you set any goals for the season, aside from trying to be top Junior? No, not right now. That's my main goal. At the end of the year I'd like to ride the Superbikers. OK, let's talk a little farther down the road. Have you set some goals for the nellt four or five yean? You bet. I'm hoping I can stay with Honda and make a name for myself like Freddie Spencer has. I'd like to be Rookie of the Year next year. Hope· fully, in a few years - I know I won't do it my first year ~ause you have to work out your bugs and everything but in a CDuple of years I'd like to be Grand National Champion. That's about every racer's dream. • .-4 00 (j') .-4 - HONDA CB·900 CB·900 GL-500 CUSTOM 80-81 81 SILVERWING 81 F GL-1100 80-81 SUZUKI GS-1ooo GS-850 GS-750 G5-750 L L EISTo L GS-650 GS-650 GS-650 GS-550 GS-450 EICHAIN GISHAFT USHAFT EISTo L&T GS-250 81 81 BO-81 80-81 81 81 81 '~='lC=" ..=-L-:' 95301-8 95301-1 93567 93555 e-_ Port_ 95585 95589" 95560 IENG.GRDI GASTANK RACK 195399 ~ 95303-6 95303-6 95303-4 95303-6 80-81 95303-9 95303-10 95303-11 95303-8 95303-7 BO-81 . =-.t::. 93572 93572 ~..= 95587·· 93572 95587" 93584 93541 93581 95590" 95590" 95590" 95564 95551 180 ONlY1 95303-7 77-80 IENG.GRD) - Kawasaki KZ-1100 AlSTANOARo 81 81 KZ·1ooo CSRILTO KZ·75«4)STANoARo BO-81 KZ·75«4) LTD 80-81 81 KZ-650 CSR KZ-550 STANDARD 80-81 KZ-550 KZ-305 KZ-250 LTD CSRfTWlN 80-81 81 BO-81 YAMAHA - XV-750 VIRAGOfTWlN 81 X5-75
