APR. %0 Whatever happened to On Any Sunday, In Good question. On Any Stmdtry. 11 - in its original form - died. Somewhere between the press screening and the box office, OAS, II succumbed to excelSive criticism and eventual management ooUapie. At the preview. a1moIt exactly one year ago, a large cQnungent of motorcycle industry and press people watched the movie, yawned, then forgot to applaud when the lights came back on. We couldn't help it. The fllm just didn't make us feel as good as we'd anticipated it would. Had we set our standards too high? Perhaps. Eleven yean ago when On Any Sunday came out, we were happy just to have a motorcycle movie. A real, full-length feature film on our favorite subject. We'd gone to last year's preview .expectin~ to feel that same excitement. and It just didn't happen. The flavor, the soul. the camaraderie of motorcycling as we know it, wasn't in OAS, II. Instead, we witueased a clean. sophisticated documentary of our heros at work on the race circuiu of the world. It was as though the film had been shot from a distance. interviews conducted by strangers with the riden hiding behind the "public personalities" they project while dealing with the general media. We weren't part of it. And that bothered us. Because, darn it, we are pan of it. You ride a motorcycle; Kenny Roberts rides a motorcycle. He's one of us; we're pan of him. or at least we believe we are while peering through our Walter·Mitty-tinted goggles. That's what was in the original On Any Sunday that OAS, II hadn't recaptured. Now for the good news. On Any Sunday, II has been remade. Only a few prime scraps of last year's flop were salvaged, and those along with many, many new feet of film were spliced together and shown to a small enthusiast press audience on Monday night, Apnl 15. Pans of the OAS, II sound track remained for our preview, but aU of the dialogue and music is prcsendy being replaced. TotaDy. Larry Huffman will again narrate the film, this titnc put together by Roger RiddeD this time, the IeCl,Uftlcea are linked together cleverly m such a manner as to produce good feelings among motorcycliau. And. I tbink. among potential motorcyclisu as weD. On A,., Sunday, 11 (the new one) is. in my opinion. a beaatiful film. Correct that: It rt1ill k a beaatiful ftIm. How can one accurately critique a series of glued-together roughs without finished music and narration? Can't. Let's put it this way. I'm very optimistic about the present venion of On Any Sunday, II, scheduled for release in the West during June and July. 1£ this sounds like 0 AS, II is too good to be true, let me temper that by stating that it's not perfect. There may be pans you won't like; and you quite likely will be able to point out some things that should have been included that weren't. But overall, OAS, II is the greatest thing that's happened to motorcycle movies in 10 yean. No, make that 11. • Cit a
