Marty Moates on an LOP Suzuki, with
Sun moving in fillt on his number-oneplated Honda. Crofl led the race for
the fInt three laps till he started having
engine problems and broke. Moales
moved into fint place ill Sun pused to
second, while Rhyan slipped to a dOlle
lhird.
One lap later, Moates had problems
and had to go to his pit, but returned
10 finish the race. Sun began to pull
away from Rhyan. who Will starting to
get pressure from Bob Elliot!. At the
end of the tint moto Sun was l!O aeeoods
ahead of Rhyan, who came in aecond,
and thirdĀ· place Elliott.
In the leCond moto, Moates look the
holeshot with Sun dOlle behind and
Rhyan third. At the end of the f!Tlt lap
and at the end of the race, Sun Will in
ftnt place, with Moates leCond and
Rhyan third. Fint overall went to Sun,
with Rhyan leCond overall and Bob
Elliott third overall.
Asked why he was here Sun said, "I
am here for a couple of weeks practicing in the sand and getting the feel of
the track in preparation for the USGP
which will be held here in Carlsbad
and also for the 500cc Nationalsl"

the moto win but the overall went to
Gerig', 1-2. Rhyan, who just Itaned
racing again a couple of weeki ago,
finiIhed 1eC0nd with a 5-1 over Tony
Wanket aboard a Ron Callaway-tuned
Yamaha. Callaway wrenched CMC',
2SOcc number ODe, Scott JoImaon, in
1980 and hopes to put Wanket at the
top. DougRenno(Yam)wufounh.
Staten. after leaving Yamaha,
JDOW1ted his new Suzuki and had little
trouble with the reIt of the field in the
2SOcc Pro diviaion.

puahed Staten in moto one but in moto
two he had to BettIe for third.

good enough for third overall hehind
Staten and Johnson. Mark Howell
(Yam) Will founh over Pat Hubbl
(Yam).
The USa: Pro contat had the larp
pune of the day. Jeff Stanford (Yam)
and Rodney Brand (Suz) bauled in
both motOll and ended up just awitching
finiahing positions with Stanford
coming out on the better end of the
Irick.
Stanford', 2-1 overall tally
bested Brand's 1-2 for the lead with
ROllI Maeda (Suz) third. Robert NoliD
(Yam) and Andy Jeffenon (Suz) made
up the top five.
An updated total of the number one
pointl race showa a tie in the 12Scc
d_between Robert Nolin and Scott
Manning. Gary Semia hu a narrow
lead over Brae Glover in the 2SOcc
d_ with David Gerig leading the
Opena.
