Kogut, sponsored by Regency Kawasaki of Jacksonville, Florida qualified eighth and went on to compete against "Superbike Mike" Keyte. Kogut ran a strong 9.10 second, 145.16 mph which would have won many a semi·final, but Keyte ripped a winning IDBA ET record 8.80/150.50 mph. The Murdock Racing Enterprises and MTC sponsored Keyte showed computer consistency turning in five consecutive passes within a tenth of a second of each other 8.90,8.83,8.80,8.80 and a 8.85/150.50 pass in the final to defeat the top qualifier and former Pro Stock Champ Sid Pogue. MTC sponsored Pogue had a new Kawasaki GPz 1000 and put it in the final against Keyte's Kawasaki 1000. Pogue had also turned in a strong elapsed times and new IDBA top speed record of 151.51 mph in defeating veteran Ralph Pitlock. 'Pogue ran off a four rum within one-tenth of a second of each other. He set down Hamp Osborn with an 8.89/149.99 run to gain a ride to the final the first time out on his new Kawasaki. There was one very interesting machine in Pro Stock.. David Shultz, last year's IDBA Sportsman Rider of the Year pushed his two-stroke Kawasaki H2 triple, vintage 1972, to third fastest qualifier behind Pogue and Keyte. He lost in the first round of eliminations, but received the IDBA Trick Engineering Award for the meet. Funny Bike Eliminator pitted three veteran pro racers -- Mike Bruso, Ken Blackburn and Terry Kizer -- and one newcomer -- Vince Santangelo -- in the semis. Santangelo qualified second and went to one semi to face Blackburn, sponsored by MTC and Mr. Turbo. Santangelo turned a 9.13/152.02 losing to Blackburn's 8.80/150.58. Blackburn was to face the winner of the other semi between Power Enterprises sponsored Mike Bruso and MTC sponsored Terry Kizer. Kizer, the top qualifier drew a bye in the first round and encountereed trouble in his transmission. Between rounds, the MTC crew worked very quickly replacing the transmission in about 30 minutes. Bruso broke first gear during a bum out against Kizer and tried to run with second gear. Kizer won the semi as Bruso redlighted for the loss. Kizer, on the MTC Kawasaki, breezed to a win over Blackburn as he red-lighted in the final. Bruso turned in a record breaking 185 mph pass on Saturday, but couldn't back it up to put it in the record books. In Pro Comp Eliminator Wiseco Sponsored Geoff Masters put his Kawasaki into the winner's slot by defeating Kawasaki rider Wayne Buckler. Masters turned a 8.98/145.63 to Buckler's 9.86/136.98. New faces in Pro Comp included Kawasaki riders Joe Waldrip and Danny Hardeman. The pair made the semis. In the Modified Sportsman class Star cycles/Sure· Fire Distributing sponsored George Bryce lost to Gast by Gast sponsored Paul Gast when he red· lighted in the final. Bryce ripped off a 8.91/155.17 in losing to Gast's 9.69/137.61. Bryce blistered the sportsman class with a - pass of 8.85/155.17 on his Double A Altered turbo powered Kawasaki. Roger Landers took the Stock Sportsman win by pushing his Suzuki GS 1000 to an ET of 10.21 He defeated Suzuki rider Mike Phillips. Kawasaki rider Dwayne Carlop topped fellow Kawasaki rider Tony Smith in the Sportsman ET final. • ...... ..... 1-0 ~ -0( ....... to - .... AII 25
