John clocked an amazing 7.82 ~onds in the Open Modified class. He took the same bike into the Open Exhibition class bikes and scored a 7.83. Most of the Open Exhibition class bikes were burning a nitro mixture for added power and speed, but Bjorkman set his mark. burning gasoline. • Two other riders finished the climb with times of under eight ~onds. Bob Day, Jr. set a time of 7.89 on his 750cc Triumph in the Open Exhibition class and Steve Stith, on an 803cc Triumph, score 7.95 in the same class. Honors for the day went, in most pan, to the local, more experienced riders. Some fairly new competitors made their marks, but none of the out· of-staters scored. Knowing that this is ually the case, why would someone drive hundreds, even thousands, of miles to enter a hillclimb? Even if the rider won, his prize was a trophy, except in the Exhibition class. And, even the top winner in the Open Exhibition class would claim less than $100. "We always wanted to go some place to a hillclimb," said Ron Senn. "When we read about this one, we decided to . take our vacations and come on out." Senn, his sons Robin and Kelly, and friends David Hicks and Don Noble, loaded their bikes and left Illinois (in a rain storm) at noon on Thursday. "We were here by 9 a.m. Saturday, your time," said Senn. "It's been a great climb and we are having a ball. Besides, tomorrow is my 47th binhday and the boys decided I should spend it in Las Vegas." "It's a pleasure to ride on good clean din instead of rocks and boulders," said Vince Thomas of Peoria, AZ. This is his ~ond trip out for the 'SHR/Coors Matterhorn Climb. "The only decent hill we had was closed by the BLM (Boo) 10 or 12 years ago." "Why? Just for the fun of it," said Dale Wadlow of Phoenix. ''This is a fun climb and it's a chance to test our equipment before the Widowmilir later this month. " The locals have as many reasons for driving to Saddleback Park for this climb. They range from Powell's "it's my hill" to comments by riders from EI Cajon, Hemet, Riverside, Los Angeles: "It's a great hill, you never know what to expect and it is always different." This is the third year that Saddleback Hillclimbers Association and Coors have joined forces to put on this Matterhorn HillcLimb. The fame is spreading. The hill is not the biggest used for competition, but it is becoming known as the most fun. It has its own challenge, a challmge that hillcLimbers from allover are ready, willing and a'ble: to accept. There is a ring of pride in a man's voice when he can tell friends that he has topped the Matterhorn. He knows he has done well and that he can return to an all new challenge the next time he faces the 'Hom. It was different.at the end of the climb than at the first, it will be different tomorrow, next week, next year. Saddleback's Matterhorn is always challc:nging, always changing, always fun. • Results MINI CLASS: 1. Brion _ (Suz). 91-175 STOCK: 1. Roy Simmona (Honl: 2. M Tower lV_I. 17&-250 STOCK: 1.
