AR. Kocinski took wins in the 80s, 100s and 125s and a second in the 250cc Sponsman class. The 250cc Sponsman class was an outstanding contest as the original field of more than 20 riders had to be pared down to 10 for the finals. Duane DuVall on h~ Corkey's Cycles Yamaha had all he could do to stave off attacks by John Kocinski and Tubby Dotson on his Dallas Yamaha 250. It took DuVall until lap three before he had a little breathing space, but pressure was continually being placed on the youngster by Kocinski, Dotson and the rest of the field. The 250cc Expen class saw Bill Herndon of Euless, TX, fresh from recent victories in Florida, return to his home track. Herndon, on his factory Honda, was well received by his enthusiastic home town fans but was afforded no cheers from his competition. More than 20 Experts took the line in the heat races, each determined to make it to the main and beat the 17-year-old Herndon. But the main event saw only 10 riders advance and it quickly became apparent that only one rider would give the nonh Texas ace a contest. That one rider, Sammy Sweet, a youngster hiInself. came out on a borrowed bike and nearly beat Herndon. Sweet, out of the Houston area, had had trouble with the bike he prepared this winter, but a good friend lent him his machine. Sweet's ability really showed as he and Herndon raced axle to axle the entire distance. At the checkered flag, Herndon had only a wheel's lead over Sweet for the victory. The Open class brought out the bigbore machines as 11 riders took the line. Don Hamilton, on his WhittMarine Honda 500 from Houston, put on a real show as he scrapped with Brett Braddy out of Ada, OK and Rusty Patillo from Irving, TX. Hamilton broadslid the big thumper through the turns, much to the delight ofthe fans. The last event of the evening was the Grand Finale which pitted the four top riders of the 100cc, 125cc, 250cc Sportsman, 250cc Expen and Opne classes against each other. Through a handicapping system which penalized the bigger bikes by placing them more than three-quaners of a lap behind the smaller bikes, a real contest developed. Sammy Sweet from the 250cc Expen ranks sped through the entire pack and emerged the winner. Results 50 MICRO MINI: 1. TIm Kay (Suz); 2. Kril Wiao (ltI); 3. Clayton Hull (Yam). 60: 1.
