Four share dough
at Corona ST/HM
By Elaine Jones
CORONA, CA, MAR. 28
Finally, Corona Raceway was
able to run a short track without
Mother Nature pouring liquid
sunshine all over everything.
The 250cc Money short track was
the first showdown of the evening.
Chris Cannon had his Rich Plueger
tuned Yamaha dialed in as be got the
jump on the eight man field followed
by Jimmy Snow, Dan Mullins and Rob
Ely. On the second of 15 laps, Rick
Reed slipped under Ely to take fourth
only to have Ely come back on the next
lap and swap places again. It was short
lived as Ely made a mistake that
dropped him to last. Meanwhile, Darren Hulbert, who had gotten off to a
slow start, went from sixth to fourth in
a blink. With five laps to go, Hulbert
moved to within striking distance of
Cannon and Snow. As the laps wound
down Ely worked his way back to founh
only to have his bike go sour. At the
checkered it was Cannon, Snow and
Hulbert.
The Open Money short track had
to have Ron Arlt feeling like a sandwich as Eddie Lawson (121) got off on
top with Jeff Johnson (121E) in third.
On the third lap Johnson moved to sec·
ond and from there on out the place·
menu were set and it was a case of follow the leader with Lawson the leader.
The 250cc Money half mile saw Rob
Ely back on the line and this time he
was ready as he jumped out ahead of
Terry Singleton and Jimmy Snow. On
the fourth lap Mike Kirby got into the
thick of things as he got by Snow who
was having mechanical problems. Darren Hulbert was running in fourth but
Kirby was able to hold him off. Roger
Thompson, aboard his new 250
Yamaha, was sorting things out and
doing a commendable job of sticking .
with the pack. The front three were
not to be budged and Ely had the win
with Singleton second and Kirby third.
The Open Money half mile was a
game of strategy and it was Lawson
who miscalculated. Perry Proieue got
the holeshot with Jeff Johnson and
Lawson in the 2-3 spou. Prioette lost
the lead to Johnson on the third lap
and on the fifth lap it was Lawson's
tum to go by. Lawson's plan was to
hang close to Johnson and make his
move closer to the end of the I5-lap
main. What he didn't count on was
Johnson going for it from the beginning
and maintaining his blistering pace.
When Lawson started to play catch up
he found the lead was too great and although he was turning faster lap times
he was unable to catch Johnson and
had to settle for second. Prioette claimed
third with Rick Reed fourth and Dan
Mullins fifth.
Another Jeff Johnson, no relation to
Open Money Jeff, came away with a
double win in the Open Novice races.
On the half mile Mike Hart led for the
fint half of the 10-lap main but at the
midway point, as if on cue, Johnson
took over and collected the gold with
Hart second and James "Chip" Told
third. On the short track Johnson
didn't have such an easy way to go as
William Brooks, Sr. grabbed the lead
with Johnson second. It took him eight
of the 10 laps to find the chink in
Brook's armor but he did and had his
double win for the night. Brooks was
. second and Robert Little third.
Remember: There is no flat track
racing in April at Corona but it will be
returning the flTSt Wednesday of May
with a TT and half mile slate.
