Munyon tops HIĀ· Mountain Enduro By Ed Regehr LOS PADRES NAT"L FOREST, CA. MAR. 29 When entering the camping and pit area, one could quickly see that a lot of time and effort is put into the Hi-Mountain Enduro by 32 the Cal Poly (San Luis Obispo) Penguins. From the organized and quiet camping area - as no bikes were allowed to be staned until race time on Sunday - to an open pit barbeque that was hosted by the Central Coast Motorcycle Association. there were plenty of pre-race activities on Saturday mcluding a trials school, a seminar on S&W shocks, and a timekeeping lesson given by Jerry Counts, who motored his Team Al Baker-sponsored Honda XR250R to second Four-stroke A with a score of 12 the following day. Another thing you noticed was riders working on their mufflers, as only a few passed the 104 decibel maximum at the sound test. Finishing off the day was home movies of the ISDT and past Hi- Mountain Enduros. With all of this very enjoyable entertainment on Saturday, you almost forgot there was an enduro the following day. but 7 a.m. Sunday arrived and many nervous C riders prepared to ride through the gate and down the pavement to mark the stan of the 51st annual Hi-Mountain Enduro. The A and B riders staned an hour later and went the opposite direction on the pavement and up into the fog. As second Open A (with 2) Spectro/ Super SeerIND/DMG Maico-spon8ored Grant Palenske wbeelied down the pavement at the start, third Open A (2) John Haaker bounced his Husky 450 up the rain-rutted. manzanita-lined ridge at 27 mph. while third Four-strolte A (15) Mike Haney slid his Yatnaha 500 into the first tie-breaker check just 6.5 miles out. Third 200cc (2) Kim Brandenburg sat at the relet just past the check. while second 250cc A (5) Doug Banh did some timekeeping down a sbon section of pavement. which was at 24.mph. Following that stretch of pavement, fust Four-stroke A (6) Doug Tullis motocrOlled his Honda XR200 through some very windy trails. as second Senior A (15) Ron Fry made sure he kept his Yatnaha 465 out of the huge rain ruts that crOIIed the fireroads while first 200cc A (1). S&T Kawasaki-sponsored Everett Angle, buzzed his KDX175 into the first gas. Most of the riders filing into the gas stop were complaining about the fog up on the higher sections of the course as it was causing some real goggle problems. Meanwhile, many riders took on gas. including second Open B (5) Steve Wheeler, third 250cc B (15) Dan Waller and first 200cc B (5) Joe Bonello. Keeping his bike straight through the whooped-out wash just past the gas was fint 250cc B Bill Keese (15) with third Open B (5) Gary Gibbs negotiating the tight, twisty trails ahead. Second 200cc B (6) Roger Gauvin flew his Can-Am off the rock steps on the downhill that the Penguins used as an uphill last year. First Open B (4) Mike Manin headed into the tie-breaker check a few miles past the downhilLwhile third 200cc B (9) Paul Beck and second 250cc B Jim Tripp cruised down the pavement to the first loop finish which was also the Criders' fmish. Taking on fuel and relaxing during the hour-long break between loops were second Four-stroke B (19) Michael Lessley, third Four-stroke B (21) Toby Kramasz and winning Fourstroke B (15) Tony Segale. Staning the second loop, which was the C loop with faster speed averages. fint 250cc A (I) Mike Garrett wbeelied his Suzuki PE250 down the pavement, which was at 42 mph, while second 200cc A (1) Tracy Walters screamed his Hi-Onen Kawasaki-sponsored KDX175 down the twisty fireroad, which was at !!6 mph and crossed the same stream many times in just a few miles. Up ahead. fint Open A (2) Bob Brooks flew his Yatnaha Yl465 through the first ~j>ecia1 test which consisted of twisty, rolling fire roads with SUpeiCli_ size water bars crossing them. Third 250cc A (5). Wheelsmith Maicosponsored Mike Adatns. was sliding his way around the grassy fire road turns in the second special test which also had water bars the size of Supereross jumps. Spashing his Honda CR250 into the stream that made up a big pan of the third special test was first Senior A (2) Jay Tullis. All of the special test sections were at 50 mph with a reset at the end of each one. Many of the riders like that set-up. as they thought of each section as a separate 10 to 50minute moto. About this time, second Woman A (129) Pam Lehman returned to the frreroad that was used about 10 miles out at the stan of this loop. while only a few miles ahead and moving very rapidly down the pavement towards the loop's finish was first Woman A (56) Kelley Motley. Already at the finish was overall winner Scott USA/Dunlop/Huskysponsored AA rider Rick Munyon wbo zeroed the course and rode tbe last 15 or 10 miles on a rear flat tire and had been a litde concerned that it might come off the rim on the ~ pavement sections at the end of this loop. The Cal Poly Penguins should be congra.tulated for a superb job as the terrain and the course marking was'excellent. Add an outstanding enduro_ with the special activities on Saturday and you have one of the most enjoyable weekends of the year. P.S_ Trophies were not given out Sunday night due to the fact that there were lIOIDe mang1ed and 1aIt score cards. Those riders were scored off the cards that were being recorded at each check. Also, a big thanks to Cal Poly Penguins Referee Greg Matthews for having some unofficial results for me by the Tuesday after the enduro. In addition, the Penguins wished to thank Duralube and Gold Belt Line for their generous product giveaways and contingencies. Results C OIIERALL & FIRST Sl.ftIl SA: BiI _ 11:061. OPEN C: 1. CMCCentral Valley Series starts at Huron By Jerry Parsons Ellis pulled a good lead to finish first. Cross held to second for the remainder of the race to finish ahead of Wonh who took home third. The Open Junior class blasted off the line with Mike Komwinder roosting away from the pack. John Hard and John Kosinski seemed unhappy with second and third and unleashed everything they had to catch Komwinder. Danny Hill had soon worked his way into the action and moved by everyone including Komwinder to hold down the number one spot. Hard moved in quickly also and took over Hill's lead shonly after. Kornwinder also moved by HiD to hold down second_ Hard fmished fmt with Komwinder and Hill taking second and third respectively. The second moto saw Hill grab the early lead.
