For once, a Utah race finally started on timel The Buzzards had a perfect day, snow then rain two days before and sunshine the day of the race. As the Amateurs and Expens left the line, the top runnen were Scott and Allen Gerber (495 KTMs), Don Fuller (465 Yam) and Kelly Sorenson (490 Maico). The fint five miles were flat out running with sharp washes where many a rider found themselves on the bottom side of their bike. At check two, it was Sorenson, Fuller and Dave Headman (465 Yam) who was the fint Amateur and stayed that way until he was slowed by a rear flat. Scott Gerber and Kris Morgan (450 Hus) finally made it into the picture at that point. Shonly after that check, Scott Gerber looped the giant KTM coming out of a wash and Headman ·bought it going up a hill. Meanwhile back in the Novice class. "Big Allen" Wilson (465 Yam) was having what he thought was a hay day, but little did he 1tD0w there was a U5cc Yamaha ridden by Mark Dean a shon distance behind. Loop two saw Sorensen drop from the race with a broken wrist (remember those sharp washes) with Strong malting a hard drive to move into second overall. At the finish it was Morgan with a large lead, Strong next and Over 30 winner Fuller. Top Amateun were Scott Godfrey, Jeff Robbins and Shawn Gerber riding strong on a new water-cooled 125 KTM. Novice champ was Open rider Allen Wilson followed by 125cc Novice Mark Dean. Results last. The newcomers and old- KAL-GARD,KUENZER & KTM A TEAM OF PROFESSIONALS timen alike battled deep sand, thick trees, cactus, mud, fatigue and each other for an hour and a half. When at last the dust settled, the stories began to flow in of riden down in cactus or up in bushes. It was hard to recognize who had won or lost as all had tales to tell. The 0-125cc class had only two finishen. The othen were either lost, broke down or pooped out leaving only Clay Beegle (the oldest of the crowd at 41 Yean of age) followed by Jeff Mau (one of the youngest at age 14). The l26-200cc class was won easily by Rodney Danner. And making it a sweep by the Danner boys, Royce Danner took the 201-0pen class. After a shan rest time, it was back to the trails again for the team race. With riden changing after each lap, fatigue wasn't as great a factor on the riden, but the machines began to show the strain with only half of the starten able to last the full hour and a half. The team of Darius Gramley and Frank Mau got off to a quick lead but were soon challenged by the team of Dean Moss and Rodney Danner. A see-saw battle ensued for seven laps before Moss and Danner took over for the next four laps. Gramley and Mau regained the lead when Moss and Danner refueled. On the final lap, Mau was holding off Danner when his leg became ~ between the rear wheel and fender. Third0{llace team rider Joel Stone stopped to help Mau get free. Then together they continued the final lap changing places several times. Mau edged out Stone at the finish line, but in fairness, the team of Stone and Joe Koury were awarded second place. A fun day ended with much talk of next time. • .... 00 .... C') .. Kal-Gard heartily congratulates KTM Team Rider Darryl Kuenzer's victory at the Forked River AMA National Enduro. Kuenzer's mastery of the grueling 144 mile New Jeney course was truly impressive as he dropped only 15 points. Kuenzer and Team KTM use Kal-Gard Lubricants because they realize the need for "the ultimate in lubrication" in their competition machines.
