-Oregon-Washington-Idaho-Utah-Alaska track special with frame by Strode, a '64 Thruxton, a '69 MSS with smoketint fairing and paint that's regularly ridden to the Classic Club's breakfast meetings, a '62 Venom Clubman, a '60 MSS and a Canadian roadracer of uncenain vintage with a special frame and a small collection of trophies won at Westwood (a "handling circuit" par ucellence) including a second overall in the 1979 points championship for rider Ian Marshall. Now, moving to the genuinely old stuff; How about a pair of Harley 500cc singles, vintage 1910 and 1911, owned by Ed Marek? These had electric lights and bicycle-type off-tire generators. Marek also exhibited a 191461 cu. in. (l000cc) V-twin with "F' head gasworks (overhead intake, flathead exhaust). In the same grouping with the Marek bikes was a powder-blue 1912 Yale V-twin with even stranger plumbing. Sure, there was the "F" head configuration again with a single side-draft carb feeding aT-shaped log manifold, but what's this? There's only one pushrod for each cylinder. Took some poking and guessing (owner unavailable for comment), but here's the plot: The external pushrod works the flathead exhaust. The intakes, apparently mounted on a common locator shaft co-axial to the exhausts, were demand- . type overhead poppets, working on much the same principle as a reed valve. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Larry Johnson brought three Honda ex-works racers, a 50cc CRI05, a 125cc CR 92 and a 250cc CR 93 - a definitive collection of Honda's early road racing efforts and some of the ftrst Honda four-valvers. They were displayed with a blowup of Hailwood at Silverstone on the 250cc ftve-cylinder, and with a fresh four-valve head turned chambers-up to show the lineage that spawned today's production four-valve Hondas. Also brought by Johnson was a rare and beautiful green/gold 250cc Paton twin. This, a true one-off, was the brainchild of Giusseppe Pattoni, who designed and scratch built the motor from the cast magnesium cases up. Not since the heydays of the Cycle World show has there been such a collection assembled indoors on the West Coast. Seeing that it was an allbike event, no detrac;ting cars or dragboats or other foofoo, perhaps this has to rank as the best indoor show in the West - ever. Over 400 riders showed up and panicipated in today's heavy race day that would have slaughtered a lesser groomed track. Of course, an inch of rain required cutting out the clay area of the track. In this way, the Minis wouldn't get into the slick stuff. Nevertheless, it was an interesting race to watch. The I25cc Experts started off with the sounds of 36 angry bikes tryinl{ for 0') ...... • Allows shock to work quicker increasing tire traction, putting more power to the ground • Designed to make the shock run cooler, substantially decreasing shock fade and prolonging shock life • Dampener causes wheel to hold to the ground which greatly improves traction in turning • Absorption of impact from hitting rocks and stutter bumps is far superior to conventiona' suspension, allows wheel to roll over obstacles instead of bouncing off • Gives more progressive dampening, therefore a smoother ride at the top with less bottoming for both front and rear shocks • Makes bike more predictable. giving confidence to the rider • Absorbs surge pulses of small sharp bumps, lessening rider fatigue • No piston weight or friction to restrict dampening.
