Clint Hardick moved to second after around 10 minutes just ahead of Turner. Burgett. Hannah, Semia aDd Hansen. Hannah dispatched m.ahead of him. except Howenon. in shon order with Hansen doing likewi8e to fall into third. Hardick wanted to keep fourth and did 10 the rest of the race with Turner and Semia scrapping behind him. Larry WGlick took his Suzulti to seventh with. Sun. Moto-X Fox rideI" David Bailey on a worb Kawaaalti aIIiI Dan Conway trailing. Howenon watched his tea mm • blow away the others in his IeCOIId moto and 1tDew what people _ going to expect. "I watched him wbell he was out there and said, 'Oh God. now I've got to do the same thing.'" Bigelow pulled the holeshot again. but this time Howerton got a good start and was right with him. At the end of one circuit, it was Howertoo, Hansen. Hardick. Bigelow and Semia diced a bit fanher back in fourth. Hannah, who was reponedly funewith his bike after the fint moto. . . on the move. He started in the pack, got to sixth on the second lap aDd picked off a rider a lap until the ISminute mark when he was third. The Hurricane followed Hansen at a distance for the next 15 minutes, seemingly unable to make a dent in that space. At 50 minutes. though, "The wind was blowing banners aCl'C* the track and one of them caught my bike and threw me off." Hansen said later. He lost lou o£ ground before restarting and fmiahed 51st for 12th overall. Hannah was unable to make up any time on Howenon and finished over 52 IIeCondI behind him. Hardick had been cruising along comfortably in third behind Hannah when he was suddenly pitched off with about 10 minutes to go. "I went a little farther to the inside around a corner 'callie there was a lapper on the outside aDd the stutter bumps were a little sceeper," he said later. "One of them just took me over the ban." He was unable to continue as the left side of his ban were bent toward the ground. Burgett moved to third at that point followed by Semia. Kawasaki's Warren Reid (who complained of handling problems), Turner and WOIIiclt. Bailey. Sun and Conway' completed the top 10. Surpningly. Howenon said, "I just didn't feel lilte 1 was going that fast today. 1 was a little stiff and teDIe at fint. 1 need about two or three laps to loosen up and get my body hot. then 1 start flowing a lot better. "Every now and then, a few turDI felt good. 1 felt lilte·1 was going just fast enough, smooth, 1 made hardly any mistalteI at all. "I'm gonna try to do better than 1 did last year. 1 want to win them all; 1 want to win every moto. h's gonna be hard." Mter today's display, though. one baa to wonder if it's going to be hard for the Suzulti riders or hard for the competition. • 00 <:J') .... He led from the drop of the gate and by the finish, had a good lead over Gibson. h was actually boring for Barnett. too. though not as much for him as the fint moto. "I kind of got a little bored in the fmt moto it was 10 long - and in the second moto I was more UIed to the outdoor (pace) then, 10 it was a lot better." he said. "I hope it's like that the rest of the year." 8 Gibson got Ward for second at the IS-minute mark again and the two held position from that point. O'Mara staned in the middle of the pack but advanced to sixth on lap two. When Burnwonh dropped ou.t of his sixthplace dot. O'Mara took it while Bentley came up behind him. off the tank before the moto. h dropped him from a secure third to ninth overall. Rounding out the top 10 moto fuUahera were Bumwonh. Chandler. Mike Beier and Gary Dircks. Johnny 0' went by Cantaloupi with two laps to go giVIng him a secure founh. but as the finishen took the checkered flag. it was Bentley'JoImson and Cantaloupi (who fell har in the late going) coming in behind the leading three. O'Mara had run out of P' with a half lap to go despite topPIl1JJ 2&Occ N.tlon81 Howerton didn't dominate his clau as Barnett did, but he still won eaaily.
