Southern Callf_nla·Arizona· BOB HANNAH/STEVE WISE on Saguaro for some great races. Both Mike Garran (Yam) and Ricky Arnold (Suz) cut on the afterburners to take first and second respectively, in the all Pro-ciasSes·combined Saguaro Sweepstakes. It was classic, exciting motocross racing from the word go. Moto one saw Kenny Schlosser (Kaw) grab the holeshot, followed closely by Garratt and David King (Yam). Half· way through lap two, Garran passed Schlosser in mid-air off the gigantic jump at the bottom of Sunshine Hill. Unnerved, Schlosser dropped to fourth, as King and Arnold moved into the second and third spots. These three battled it out the rest of the race, lapping everyone but the fourth place rider by moto's end. The order of finish was Garratt, King and Arnold. In moto two, Garratt pulled the holeshot, paced closely by Roger McCluskey, Jr. (Yam) and Arnold, who took over second position following a McCluskey crash. From there, a four-way battle for third developed between Scb,losser, Rick Watmore (Yam), Brett Hanna (Mai) and King. Suddenly., it was musical motocross as, in quick succession Watmore passed Schlosser, King passed Hanna, King and Hanna passed Schlosser and, finally King passed Watmore. Meanwhile, Garratt and Arnold, somewhat detached from the commotion behind, widened their lead to the point where it became possible to crash together (whi.ch they both subsequently did), get up and continue racing (which they also did) while maintaining their positions. Following the crash Arnold passed Garratt climbing Sunshine Hill and held on for a finish order of Arnold, Garratt and King. Overall it was Garratt, Arnold and King. Bill Duffner (Yam) blasted off to capture the holeshot in the Senior, Open Amateur and Open Novice race that resulted in a two way exchange for second place between Biff Barner (Hon) and Ron Garry (Yam). The moto concluded with Duffner, Barner and Garry placing in that order. In the second moto Barner grabbed the holeshot with Don Davis (Yam) and Garry in hot pursuit. Duffner caught up to Barner and Davis and then crashed and found himself in the eighth position. Meanwhile Garry passed Davis and Duffner moved up through the' pack passing everyone in the last lap with Duffner, Barner and Davis finishing in that order. The three classes of the Minis ganged up and delighted the crowd with a spectacular show. Danny Furtney on a Yamaha ran his first race and placed first in the Beginners. R&D Suzuki riders Shaun Kalas and Larry Moore smoked the track with Kalas placing first and Moore second in the Novice class. Amateur Kenny Valentine (Suz) won a trophy for first .
