In the 250cc Pros, it was no contest for "The Howler" Howell as he ran easily ahead of Dan Watson (Yam) in the first moto after a Woody Carlson (Kaw) slide-down and then cruixd to the second go-'round win over Carlson. In the top ATC classes, it was a case of "Live by the tie-brealr.er, die by the tie-brraker" for Honda mounted Steve Wright as the 1980 l40cc Modified Champ scored a come from behind win over Yamaha·mounted Mark Manensrn in the 140s, and then had to settle for second behind the always spectacular Ace Williams in the Open Modifed class. It was a classic matchup of two·stroke vs. four strokes in both classes also and after the first night the scorr is 1- I, 50 let's see what happens next weeld Returning to the motorcycles, out· standing Intermediate ridrs werr turned in by George Speck in the 2505 and Terry Murray in the 1255. Yamahamounted Speck swept both motos over Richard Mannschrrclt, and Murray (Yam) followed up his Sunday win at Carlsbad with another rwo for rwo blast over an always charging Bobby Vrhel. The 125cc Juniors provided their usual brand of aggressive riding, but when it was all over both divisions werr won in two for two prrfonnancrs. Chris Apodaca (Y1m) took the first division over Bobby Came in a come from behinder, and Mitch Palmer toolr. the second division over a pressing Tom Curran. The Junior Minis were out in force, and Charlie Sampson took a close rwo for rwo victory over a very detenninrd Tim SchOOll. The new Speedway 117 MX coune, with its Stadium-Croa "peaky" double jump at the. finish lookrd to be a double only for the Pros after practice, but by the second round the first thrrr or 50 in all cIa-. including the Mini Juniors were clearing it! A special thanks to Ken Cooftr of C&V Cotnpetition Specialties for thrrr days of worlr. on the tractor to help our regular trackman, Inyo Corrrsino, with a Yrry muddy meIlIl A reminder for all sponsman riders, both MX and ATC, that merchandise certificates are available each week instead of trophies at Speedway 117. Dickinson, Campbell take NMA Wlnte,.. nationals finale By Tom Corley SAN DIEGO, CA, MAR. 15 The second round of action in the National MotQ-spons Association/Kawasaki Wintemationals was scheduled at Barona Oaks Minicycle Park. Well. the couple hundred panicipants showed up but unfonunately the rain turned the facility into a mudhoIe and caUleti the race to be postponed. This day was a differrnt story completely as the riders enjoyed thrmsrlves under a hot sun. This time the long drive out to Ramona was well wonhwhile and the NMA made this Barona race the final event of the series. Kawasaki super trophies were given out to 50% of the class winnrn and others rrally made out by winning a Kawasaki motorcyclel Many of the NMA riders stan out in the P~ Wee .ranks and work up to the IIScc Minicyclr cIa-s. Rudy Dickinson from Norwallt did just this and won his fmt Expert race. defeating the 8Scc Modified Expen 12 and over competition on his R&D Racing Suzuki. Dick· inson won the fmt moto ahead of Kawasaki-sponsored Sam Storer and Tracy Meeu' La Habra Yamaha bike. After having a poor finish in the first moto, Rick Hemme came back and led the pack in the fmal moto for the win. Dickinson had to trail Hrmme this time while Bruce Bunch was third. A super 1·2 finish gave Rudy Dickinson the overall win over Storer, Todd Campbell, Hemme and Bunch. Campbell downed the 8!1cc Stock Expen twelve and over race. He couldn't have put on a better perfonnance, winning both motOl for a clean sweep. Other top participants included Hemme, Brunch, Meeks and Storer. Shaun Kalos from Litchfirid Park. AZ, made his trip worth his while as he destroyed the 8Scc Modified Novice 9· 1I class. Chris Cole took second in this contest ahead of Jeff Reynolds. Local rider Charlie Sampson showed them the way in the 8Scc Modified Novice 12 and over event, taking rwo wins over Rod Robinson. Derek Nye finished third in front of Tim SchOOll and Mike Thompson. By looking at the 125cc bikrs on the staTting line it appeared as if almost everyone had a water·cooled model. Vince McMahon won the I25cc Stock Intennrdiate race by winning the first moto and then taking second in the final race, which Doug O'Donnell won on his new Suzuki Floater. McMahon had the best point finish which earned him the first place trophy in front of O'Donnell and Taylor Marcell. O'Donnell won the first moto in the 125cc Modified Intennediate class over McMahon and Marcell. It looked lilr.e Doug was going to take the overall· win but he took a sixth place in the final moto. Marcell led the race with Terry Murray srcond and Bobby Voorhees third. A S-I score gave Kawasaki·mounted Marcell the tallest trophy. McMahon, O'Donnell, Billy Evans and Eddie Guajardo finished second through fifth. Results PEE WEE STOCK: 1. Duolin Evwlo lhal; 2. Chris _ l h a l ; 3. s.n Thormon. PEE WEE MOD: 1.
