On 8 new GPz1100. Whitney Blekea... set 8 new Willow Springs Iep record.
sports Club promoter Stu Peters
ran each class three full heats
and insured plenty of riding time for
~tyone.
Honda-mounted Rich Eierstedt
powered to victory in the 500cc Pro
class with three top finishes. Eiersledt
looked strong throughout the day's
races but in the second heat of the Pro
class Yamaha rider Randy Blevins
pushed Eierstedt and nearly moved
mto the front slot before both riders
tangled..
As the pack flashed by Blevins and
Eierstedt remounted and began the
long drive back to the lead. With the
heat almost over Eierstedt and Blevins
caught up to leader, "Little John"
Hateley. Hatdey kept his twin
Triumph out front for another
before Eierstedt moved into the lea and
Blevins followed. Honda rider Mike
Stepak alao put the moves on Hateley
to capture third at the flag.
Eientedt went on to earn the overall
win aa Stepak picked up the second
place money thanks to a strong second
place finish in the first heat. Blevins
nailed down third for the day and
founh went to Hateley.
Maico muter Carl Ellen had some
probletns starting his borrowed 500cc
Honda but once on the track Ellen
proved more than a match for the big
thumper and his Junior Old Timer
competitors. Ellen placed second in
the fint heat behind BSA rider Bob
Tryon but the Dat two heats fell to
Ellen's onslaught. Tryon split second/
third place finishes with fellow BSA
ridrr William Thomas to clinch secood
overall. Thomas finished third.
The four-stroke Mini class was all
Rick Atkins' aa the young Honda pilot
easily outdistanced his competition.
Atkins even took a fall in heat number
two but remounted without losing a
place. Honda-mounted Rob Hendricks
kept the pressure on early in each race
but had to settle for second overall
ahead of Hugh Blacka, alao on a
Honda.

battle at LIghtweIghts 0.37 TT
By Maureen Lee
ORANGE, CA, MAR. 22
The scramblers of District 57 are
very happy now; they've heard
the word that races are scheduled
for Perns and Elsinore. so those
of you who kept the faith keep checking the Cycle News Calendar so you
don't miss any of tbern.
Spring fever waa all over the place
for the Lightweighu scrambles at Saddleback and spring tends to make
animals and people do strange things;
like riding in a way they don't
normally or even going to the point of
bike switching.
The 250cc c1asIIes were nicely full,
and they proceeded to have at it_ Gene
Chandler looked like he waa going to
be the winner in the Novice class but
his bike had other plans and wouldn't
run the next two motoa. Mark Coker
waa the same way, coming in second
on the first moto and then dilappearing. The rider really getting his share
of the publicity waa Bobby Beer. In
the second moto he had a time with
the staner who tried to convince him
he wasn't going to drop the flag with
Beer's front end way forward. Fmally
convinced after mutterilJ8l and throttle
mappilJ8l from his fellows around
him, Beer staned to ooze back and
then killed it on the line and he had to
follow along after them with a distinct
disadvantage. A rider craahed in that
round and waa down in tum one ... the
staner did not stop the race because it
seemed that the riden on the track
could successfully avoid him ... but
there waa a protest and all that stuff
and I didn't hear the outcome of it all,
but there were some unhappy people
around.
In the next moto Beer managed to
prolong the stan a bit by riding back
and fonh (aa with draging clutch)
but he finally decided to race only to
go straight on after the jump and fall
down. He was down and not moving
much in a spot that could only be
reached by the ambulance if they red
flagged the race. Out came the flag and in very fine riding shape, after the
race had come to a halt was good old
Bobby lining up again. Has to be
spring fever when you bait a starter
like that, but lest you think he got
away with it, he didn't. His bike
refused to make it up the hill and kept
him from staying with the front runnen. Jim Stentz (4-1-4) won the class,
John Barricklow was second and in third
was John McKee with a 5-8-2 and
having the thrill of running out of gas
on the course too.
In the 500cc Expert class Rob
Pfetzing sure appreciated the ride on
his dad's stock bike but didn't like the
fact it made him look ';~uirrely." It
did look a bit better for him when he
tightened down everything he could
between motos. He and Denny Briggs
had something going, and there was
roughhousing in the turns more than
once. In the last round Briggs got
Pfetzing just before the uphill; Rob
tried to get him back on the inside but
it was no go and Briggs had the inside
advantage as they dropped down into
the bowl and around to the checkered
flag ... it waa a good one, it wasl
There were the usual two money
races, and quite a few in each class
were forced out; you couldn't have
blamed the weather, it was lovely. In
the 250cc Money class overall it was
James Morris, Jimmy Snow and Roger
Thompson with Randy Bird and Curtis
Cannon dropping out.
In the 500cc Money class it was
Pfetzing and Briggs again, this time
joined by Bobby Sanden, Perry
Protette, Chris Cannon and Rex
Hailey. Well, one of 'em tried to stuff
the other one going up the hill but
didn't get away with it; the action received appreciative cheen from the
stands. In the last moto Hailey and
Sanden were at it, with Sanden falling
off fmally ... he doesn't do that often,
while Hailey sailed on for the moto win
and second overall behind Pfetzing.
