Ron Dillon, riding for. Dillon
Cycle Sales of Caldwell, steered
his trick white YZ493 into first
overall in the 96-mile first annual
Outlaw 100. The sponsoring club, the
Owyhee Outlaws, were putting on
their first race, and they promised a
return to the "old-time" rougher desert
courses of the past.
The club was alSo paying $100 to
first overall and $50 to each Expert
class winner in hopes that some of the
local motocrossers would show up.
This proved to be a futile gesture, however, as only 75 desert regulars showed
up on this perfect, sunny morning.
The author is infinitely curious as to
just what it would take to bring some
of these MXers out. Booze? Women?
Bob Hannah? Free movies?
At 11 a.m., the banner dropped
and the usual thundering herd charged
the smokebomb hill. Good luck was already on Dillon's side as Oregon's Bill
Dowers (590 Hus) broke his handlebars,
and Idaho's Mark Olberding (250
Hus) lost the course. This paved the
way for Dillon, as he slipped into the
lead about· two miles past the bomb.
Running right behind were Bob
Hennessey (465 Yam) and Senior
Darrel Lankford (400 Suz). Olberding
·was also charging back watching closely for the course markings. The course
was as promised, very tight and rocky
with lap times running about 55
minutes for the leaders.
As the race progressed, Dillon con·
tinued to stretch his lead, eventually
winning by over 16 minutes.
Olberding settled into second overall
and had to hang on tight as a flat tire
late in the race slowed him considerably.
Moving right up to finish third overall,
second Open Expert, was Clint
Stephens. This was Clint's first-ride on
his new 450 Honda, and he showed
that he is a force to be reckoned with.
Darrel Lankford (400 Suz) won the
Senior class, and finiShed an outrageous
fourth overall. What a ridel Without
Steve Henry to bother him, Belview's
Roben Nancolas (Yam), wnn the
125cc class with ease, finishing a super
sixth overall. Usually, Steve and
Roben fight like cats and dogs for the
top 125cc spot, but Steve is a member
of the Outlaws club so he sat this one
out. Curt Mastrude came over from
Baker, OR and was rewarded with the
200cc class win and 11 th overall.
In the early afternoon, after
everyone had fmished, the club treated
all racers and pit crews to a free chili
feed and keg party next to the Snake
River. This was a really classy ending
to a really classy race. Owyhee Outlaws,
we racers welcome you to the small
brotherhood of Idaho desert racing
clubs with open anns. Idaho motocrossers, you just don't know what
you're missingl
