Schlag and Magoo
sweep Argyll MX
By Terri Emery
DIXON, CA, MAR. 8
Clear skies and lack of wind made
for a nice race day for over 400
rnotocrossers at Argyll Park. In
the first Expert race, Open class
powerhouse of the day, KTM-sponsored Joey Schlag. hit the holeshot
with Dave Coupe, Dave Wood and
Jerome Heiberger close on his
knobbies. Heiberger moved up and by.
the fifth lap was in second position.
Wood wobbled like a mad man after
lap two when his rear wheel started to
fall apart. Keeping his bike up and
holding tight gave this Yamaha
support rider a third-place finish. Dan
Turner got across the finish an easy
fourth.
Schlag pounded down the holeshot
again in mota two. Again it was
Coupe. Wood, Heiberger and Turner
in front with. him. Heiberger just
doesn't like fourth position and in
some startling in-and-about moyes,
got around Coupe and Wood to finish
second. Jaeger-sponsored rider Coupe
finished third. Wood was dicing his
best with some good block maneuvers
on Turner who looked like a snake in
the grass when he did a quick slide
through the mud giving him fourth
with Wood behind him.
Hi-Paint-sponsored Danny "Magoo"
Chandler and Dan Turner battled for
the number one position in 125cc
Expert. Lap one saw Turner three
seconds behind Chandler and James
Cressa five seconds behind Turner. By
lap two, "Magoo" and Turner were 16
seconds in front of Cressa. Fantastic
blocking by. Cressa kept Tim Leat,
Michael Whalen and Scott Rebuck
behind him. Mike Preston moved from
eighth place to finish third. Rebuck
hung on to his bike and fourth.
Chandler and Turner fought it out
again for moto two. Midway through
the race with a IO-second lead, Turner
was down and out and nowhere in
sight. That put Chandler in front with
nobody to bother him. Next to take
the checkered flag was Preston
followed by Rebuck, Cressa and
Randy Blair.
Michlltsch doubles
at Eugene MX
By Clay and Suanne Light
EUGENE. OR, MAR. 8
Today's program was billed as
Old Timer's day, but the stars of
the day were the younger generation as Tim Michlitsch (DGI
Kaw support) took both the 250cc and
Open Pro classes and Eugene's Joe
Spangler (SUI) went wild going 1-1 in
1l0tly contested 125cc Pro action. Portland's Bill Naylor did go fast enough
on his Yamaha to claim first in the Old
Timer Expert class while the elder
Burgett, Dick, took second on what
e.lse but a Yamaha.
In destructive 125cc Pro action, Joe
Spangler (Eugene Suz) took the
holeshot with Loch Names (Yam of
Springfield), "Radical" Rod Keller
(Eugene SUI), Vince Warren (Yam),
and David Van Epps (Suz) following.
Spangler made no mistakes and
certainly wasn't going to let anyone by
him on his new Suzuki Floater.
Names and Keller were going at it
for second as a three-way dice for third
was going on between Warren, Van
Epps and M.ike Danial (Santiam Yam)
who were trying to keep the leaders in
sight. At the flag, Spangler took the
WIn
followed by Names, Keller,
Warren, Van Epps, Danial and
Wayne Church (Valley Cycles/Yam).
Mota two saw Spangler do his
famous disappearing act with Church
holding down second and Keller in
third. Names was in founh with
Warren hot on his tail as Spangler was
leaving the rest of the pack to eat his
roost and Church was holding off
attempts by Keller for second.
Spangler was again untouchable for
the overall. Church took second
followed by Keller, Names, Warren,
Van Epps and Danial.
In 250cc Pro racing, it was another
Tim Michlitsch benefLt as he walked
away from his other "victims" on his
Kawasaki support ride. Following him
the entire mota was local hero Skeet
Hise. Skeeter was doing everything he
could possibly do to keep Tim in
striking distance, but time soon ran
out. Washington rider Arne Hettman
(Han) made a.good ride in third place
by holding off the advances of Steve
Williams (Hergs/Yam suppoq). Kelly
Whelchel (Han) rounded out the top
five at the flag.
Mota two saw Michlitsch again take
the lead, but this time he had Steve
Williams to contend with. Williams
hung right on his tail the whole mota
while trying to make space between
himself and Hettman who was
beginning to malce a charge for the
lead but to no avail. Michlitsch took
the win and the overall with a 1-1 as
Hise took second overall with his 2-4
and Hettman's 3-3 was good for the
third pay spot.
Open Pro was just as exciting as
Michlitsch went to the front of the
pack
and
Mitch
Kirkpatrick
(Gresham SUI/Hus) was right there
also. Portland's Joe Knight (Gresham
Suz/Mai) was not going to let these
two get away easily so he applied the
pressure but had to settle for third over
Dave Sheppard of Bend, OR on a
Husky.
Moto two, it was another Michlitsch
runaway as lie streaked to the front
followed by Knight, Kirkpatrick,
Shepard and the rest of the pack.
Michlitscb and Kirkpatrick soon found
themselves way out front as Knight was
forced out and went for a DNF.
Michlitsch took the win going I-I
again and taking four of four Jar a
perfect day. Kirkpatrick went 2-2 for
second as Shepard's 4-3 was good for
third.
Many Old Timers showed up to do
their thing and Bill Naylor (Yam)
came oUt on top over Dick Burgett
(Yam) who, of course, is Rick
Burgett's dad (which means there are
no problems when Dick needs parts for
his scoot).
