These fantastic people "rescued" my wife, son and I from the confines of a mini pickup truck cab at the Coyote Derby Enduro. Our friend's motorhome was stopped at Cajon Pass due to high winds and we had no place to sleep other than in the cab. At 5 a.m. we woke up cold and cramped, looking everywhere for our buddy's vehicle. Th.i~, is wher,t we were. rescued by "Fat Phil and hiS ultra-tnclr. rolling hotel. Enclosed is a copy of a letter sent by me to Chevron Land and Develop' ment Company opposing the imminent destruction of Ontario Motor Speedway. Now we need the help of every concerned reader, whether racer, spectator, or spons supporter. For-all who have wondered what could be done to fight Chevron - here is your chance. All else h~ failed; The only weapon we have left IS public pressure, public indignation. Write to Chevron. Let them know you don't want to see Ontario demolished. Each letter, each post card with the message "Don't ~troy Ontario" is important. If you Wish, tell them you won't buy Chevron produet5, and tell them why. They've gOt us up against the wall, but w~ won't go down without a fight. Wnte to: R.F. Schlecht, President, Chevron Land and Development Co., P.O. Box 5069, San Francisco, CA 94119. We desperately need your help. Join us. Dear Mr. Schlecht: When Chevron Land and Development Company purchased Ontan'o Motor Speedway we all wondered why. Was Chevron going to promote racing' Maybe this would be the shot in the arm OMS needed. How wrong we were. It didn't talte you long to announce your intentions - the destruction of this world famow race traclt. For what.' Condominiums' A shop~ center' And why' Why spend 1mlhons for that noble facility when there is abundant vacant Iond ;;. the area' If you particulorly wanted to build in Ontan'o, why not buy something much cheaper.' Many of w have expressed our distress. A. spoltesperson to you was grven . polIte .attention, and empty promISes to listen to alternative proposals.. ~ou promised a JO·day hold on demolItIon to supposedly allow time for propositions and pions to operate the faahty on a profitable basis. But it now appears that was only a device to pacify, and divert attentio/,!, as the demolition progresses. Why, we aslted ourselves naively, would they spend all that money to buy the traclt only to demolish ia Then the dismal thought - could it be you want to lose money on the fadlity' Tax u:rite-offs' Offset some of those "windfall profits" before taxes' . Is the company that cloims it was '-born on the frontier" more interested in a tax shelter than the public mteresa We're not .asIting that you perform any magnantmow act of chanty. Just Reply to Sheek Mr. Gochnaur's so-called accusations in the Feb. II issue of Cycle News are not all that unsupported. Most, if not all, of his observations are correct. The main problem is the AMA's continuing belief that the BLM is not the enemy. There are a hell of a lot of BLM people malting big decisions who a~it to b.eing preservationists (ecologISts, enVIronmentalists, naturalists, whatever), but say this doesn't affect their ju.dgement. Does the AMA really buy this? Do they really believe that no~y in the BLM cares about preservation? Maybe the AMA is not aware of the high BLM official who will be quitting to become a biggy in the National Wildlife Federation. Or how about the BLM, bigshot who takes jeep rides with the SIerra Club to discuss, among other things, destruction of the desen by we off-roaders. (Sierra Club jeeps must be the orlly ORVs allowable?) If the AMA would just accept that the BLM is the enemy, too, and that others have an important role in keeping B·to·V alive (like the Phantom Duck), they would have a lot easier time convincing riders to support the AMA the way they have the Ph~ntom Duck. Their suit is a step 10 the nght direction. ROBERT ALLESSI Lawndale, CA Published Iettera do not nec:eaurily reflect the position of Cycle News. Inc. Send letters 10 Volcea. Box 498. Long Beech.
