Dale "Pig Fanner" Singleton from Dalton, GA,
made good his promise to, "Hold a champagne
party for all my fans and supporters at about
4 p.m. on Sunday." Singleton popped the champagne for his second win in the
Daytona 200 half an hour early.
but who was keeping track of
time? It was a popular victory for
the 25·year-old rider whose game plan
called for a calculated ride taking advanta~ of every break in the attrition
and mistake-marred event.
In second place a full 20 seconds
back, was Frenchman Marc Fontan
while third went to Connecticut Yankee
Rich Schlachter. David Aldana and
Dan Chivington filled out the top five.
All were Yamaha TZ750 mounted.
Rounding out the top 10 were Kevin
Stafford, Jimmy/Adamo, Mark Homchick, Frenchman Christian Sarron
and Australian Wayne Gardner. Gardner was aboard the first four·stroke a Moriwaki Kawasaki.
It was chorus time in winner's circle
as Singleton's entoura~ serenaded
everyone with their version of pig calls.
"Boy, it feels good," said Singleton. "(
want to thank so many people, my pit
crew, spoDlOrs Taylor White and Carl
Bouckaert. and a super special thanks
to my mechanic from Australia. John
Redding.
"I ran the race I wanted to right
from t!Ie start. I took it easy because
the 200 is a very long race. I just wanted
to stay with the leaders. I don't even
pay much attention to my pit signs
unless they're for gas. because if you're
in the hunt after the second gas stop,
that's when the real racing comes
down. Just about everything went
smoothly."
Singleton was then shown his front
tire which was missing lar~ chunks of
rubber on the left side. "Golly'" he ex·
claimed. "I noticed a bit of a handling
problem in the final laps under braking in tum one," said Singleton, "but I
never thought anything like that was
the problem."
Goodyear's Chuck Kerns couldn't
explain the problem either. which
showed up on at least three oth~ finishers. "It's the same tire we've used for
the past three years at DaytoM." said
Kerns. "We'll have to conduct some
